It is a very nice looking handle. Spalting is not a term I'd heard before a few years ago. As the types of wood like maple and birch that seem to be common in the Northern hemisphere are introduced here, a similar type of thing happens with our native Sassafras. The darkening happens in the heart wood, so the term used is Blackheart Sassafras. It causes nice figuring and shades
https://www.wood-database.com/blackheart-sassafras/

Unless you don't plan on using it for another year, why not make a mask now?

Yeah it is really nice, when i cut my firewood i always throw some of the interesting ones to the side, like this bit of Beech

I also really like the end grain on them and wanted to make a set of scales for a sak with it, i just don't think it will hold up very well and it will have no strength,  i suppose plenty epoxy would hold it all together though  :dunno:

I wasn't serious about waiting a year to make the mask, i will get round to it eventually

You could send it to someone to get it stabilized :tu: That would make it plenty strong for scales

another piece of wood to the back of it :dunno:

Would that work with thin end grain though ?  would be great if it did  :tu:

Good thinking batman, a nice thin bit of beech should match the colours, might not even notice it  :tu:

I think it would, as the stabilizing is filling the wood with some kind of resin/epoxy :tu:

True  :tu:  i had a quick check how to do it myself, i just need an hvac pump and a vacuum chamber apparently,  neither of which i have.. i will have a look around and see if anyone local can do it, i like this wood but rarely use it for anything because its so brittle, i now have options though, cheers guys  :salute:

I was thinking that myself when I found a piece of birch with a very nice pattern, but it got scrapped because of how soft the wood gets(rotten). A cool thing about stabilized wood is you can get it colored when stabilizing it :like: you can't really do it after it's stabilized though
If you go through with it, I can't wait to see

I remembered reading something about this, and was wondering how strong is the vacuum chamber so there is enough negative pressure inside the wood to suck in all the resin.  Must be some kind of a hardcore gear I presumed?

Soft wood might shrink if I'm not mistaken because of the pressure.

Thanks to that, I have no idea.  Nowadays I see a lot of fancy scales, some looked dyed, but others I am not even sure whether they are resin permeated or not.

It's worth looking into i think, there are so many beautiful woods out there that we wouldn't consider using otherwise, even bone would benefit from being stabilized probably, i think basically enough vacuum to remove air and replace it with resin..no clue what pressure that is though :dunno:

8)  pic!    :like:

:D the beauty of it is, if you cut a few mill off it it will change the map :tu:
