Awlso my baton (ASP type) is B/O as well but I can't find a pic' at the moment  ::)

A big "yes" from me and really loving the MXBS (bring on a Surge sized version Vic'  :pok: )

I have some black oxide multitools.  While I like the way they look, I don't like the way the black coating gets on my hands.  More importantly, the black color makes it difficult to distinguish among the internal tools in low light conditions.

This was mentioned earlier. The initial excess powder can be wiped off. Preferably with some mineral oil. I like Ballistol. After that its fine.
The impact on the implements visibility is a good point

I agree, good point. However, I tend to use the BO Wave the most, the internal implements are so varied in shape and bulk, it's hard to mistake them from one another.

That'd be a YAY from me.  I have always like them.  They wear so beautifully.  I don't have a picture but I have a few and one day someone wanted my BOPST more than me so I sold it to them.  I was so happy they got it as everyone needs a BOPST.  I wish LM would BO all their offerings.

Not worth the price difference from a regular model, IMHO.
It's a significant difference, too. I'd be hesitant to pay such a premium just to try out black oxide. On the other hand, a Leatherman Rebar in black oxide is the same price as the equivalent plain stainless steel model. Sorta makes me wish I'd bought the BO one.

:iagree: I think the premium Vic. is charging for a BO model is not justified by the extra cost producing rhem.
I don't have a BO Rebar

Not a fan of BO here.  Most of the reasons have been mentioned already, but include
- harder to find if dropped
- wears off
- comes off on hands and other things
- most manufacturers charge quite a premium for BO versions vs. plain stainless

If I were some sort of special operator, then perhaps I would see the value of a non-reflective tool.  As it stands, though, the cigars, packaging, cordage, bottle caps, screws, and jagged fingernails that are the most common targets of my tools have yet to be spooked by the sight of shiny stainless.

 :hatsoff: Nate

I agree on...
- harder to find if dropped
- wears off

From the current responses I would think that the wear is taken mostly aesthetical.
Some love it and some not.

About...
- most manufacturers charge quite a premium for BO versions vs. plain stainless

I can only think of Victorinox charging a premium.
Gerber and Leatherman seem not to

And...
- comes off on hands and other things

is not an issue if you wipe off excess BO powder with mineral oil before first use.
I never saw this problem then on my LM, Gerber or Vic. examples.

I have a few as well as various black (or otherwise) coated/painted knives.

The main reason I do not use them is that I do not need to, as the multitools I regularly use just happen to be the shiny ones (ST300, Squirts..)

I also do not like the way they look when scratched, though this is true for any tool or knife with coloured parts.

Plenty o PSTs here too.

I even bought a new in box BO one 6 years ago for $50......  Someone had lots and was selling them reasonably, so there must still be several around

I have done only minimal looking into this, but it seems that is the case.

Same here. I mitigate that as much as possible by carrying them in a sheath or a dedicated pocket, and taking care not to drop them or let them bang into other objects.

I do take good care of my tools too, especially the BO ones. I had to get used to the worn look style myself. It is an easier way to enjoy them though  :D

Personally, I just don't get BO. Why would I want my tools to be less visible, covered in a finish that's not very good at rust prevention, AND pay a premium for the privilege?

Not my thing, but people should do what makes them happy.

Hey, I heard Leatherman makes red oxide tools. You just gotta wait a short while for the rust to show up.  :P

::) I rarely have any amount of regular rust show up on a LM and very rarely take care of the ones I carry :dunno:

BO tools just have a nice look is why most people that do have them, carry them

Who would only want a car in one color choice  same difference  ;)

It's better visible in the sandy desert or snowy mountains?  :D
Joking aside, a black knife blade is more stealthy than a shiny one. This does help in public over here.
I know that gives some people in other areas of the world a chuckle. Lucky you  :P

Also, I think every additional corrosion protection is a plus?

And so far from what I have seen only Victorinox appears to charge a premium for BO.

:D
