Defend the Scandi grind!

Ok ofter hollow grind's Scandi is my least favourite grind, to my mind it's too thick, you remove far to much metal every time you sharpen it properly (assuming you don't just put a micro bevel on it like most people do) and it's not very general purpose, infact it's very woodwork specific to my way of thinking

Now I know there's a few of you on here (I'm looking at you Dave and Mikko ) who have got a few of the beast's, so what am I missing why do the like's of Mr Mears prefere it to the, in my opinion, superior convex and full flat grinds

There weaker, and they wedge really easily in wood, fruit and just about anything else your trying to slice through

Make some fuzz sticks or cut a tomato with your SI the try it with your Voyager and you'll see why i don't like them

As an EDC knife, I find hollow grinds to be the best.  Can't say I have ever had any problems.

There fine for light cutting tasks, but they really are a pain when a heavier task needs doing

Nah, Hollow grind is indefensible to my way of thinking (allthough it does catch the light like no other grind ) so no need

On my Mora the scandi grind is too acute for the steel. Even after I put a 30° final bevel on it (original must be 25° or even lower), I can see reflection from edge after peel a small pumpkin.

I like the Scandi grind for it’s superior performance on wood…I want my field knife to be able to make shavings for firemaking and easily deal with whatever carving task I need it to do. I rarely process game or fish, but just about any grind can work just as well given a properly sharpened edge.

I’m experienced enough in sharpening to get most any other grind to perform on wood as well as a Scandi but those grinds rarely give that level of performance out-of–the-box in a mass produced knife.

I’ve only had one Scandi ground knife not perform out of the box the way I expected it to…I’ve had many hollow and flat ground blades that were sharp, would shave hair and was fine all the mundane tasks, but would not carve wood or make shavings well without re-profiling the edge.

I only have a few small Scandis with a full flat bevel – for leatherwork and whittling. The rest I maintain with a small secondary…polished on a strop.

Fallkniven’s convex edge is wonderful…no reason to abandon that in favor of the Scandi grind.

I personally like flat-grind, usually with a convexed secondary…hollow grind, not so much. But if I like the particular knife I will use it as long as I can get the edge to perform the way I expect it to.

Interesting points there Dave I am thinking of getting another quality Scandi, as I don't think I've given them a fair crack of the whip

well,to me the grind u call scandi grind is the best,as its durable and very easy to maintain,and it spilts better than any other grind.splittin is one of the tasks i like my blade to survive,as i make firewood by batonin the blade with  piece of wood.and maybe i like it the best just becaus eiv e grown with/to it,as we Finn´s dont have much else,and we have always been makings scandi´s.i dont have any knowledge why Mears chooses otherways,but maybe he has grown to other grinds,or he just gets thos efree from sponsors .i would be very scared to walk in woods with some tiny hollow ground as those are PIA to sharpen,nad they jam in fresh wood,theyre hard to control when making bigger tasks due to jamming,and yes they wear quite much when i sharpen those .

BUT maybe you need a double-deal,that has one leuku and one smaller scandi grind,to cover all areas in bushcraft.use bigger for chopping etc and make those whittlings wth the smaller.

somethin like this,this aint bad at all and is pretty affordable,if youre about to use it,and not lookin for those over-decorated POS´ones
