Fixing a Trekker
on: December 23, 2019, 12:55:27 AM
Hi there fellow travelers,

I'm thinking perhaps I should fix my old trekker since it's out of production and was my edc for years! I broke the awl being an idiot (using it to hack into oysters on the rocks).

Questions...
- if I were to use a punch or similar to replace the awl; what are the chances I'll need spare parts? If so, which parts? :)
- should I only need to take out the pin holding the screwdriver and awl?
- anything else I should know? :/

I have replacement scales etc which I plan to put on later. That's easy!

Already a lot of cleaning has been done.

Cheers!

I don't know the answer to any of your questions, but I'd like to come along for the ride.

To the best of my knowledge, just the pin holding the screwdriver and awl.  Take a look over in the Modders section.  There's a thread on how to swap out the corkscrew for a Philips.  Different than what you are doing, but the procedure is the same.

Oh lol; there's modders section... that'd be right. I have a link to the Knights forum and often forget the rest of the world exists... my bad? And yeh, the corkscrew/philips mod has to be quite similar. Cheers!

You can also sent it for repair if you don't want to void the guarantee. ;)

This would be a fun and easy repair, and yes, you should be able to get away with replacing just the awl.  But if I understand your question rightly, you won't want to punch the pin out.  Rather, put the SAK in a horizontal vise and carefully drill just the head of it off.  Then use a pin drift to carefully push it the rest of the way.  You will need replacement pin stock, and I don't know what size, but someone on the modding forum will know.

The king of this, and the guy who wrote that thread on replacing just the Philips implement IIRC, is Max Stone.  I'm sure he'd be happy to advise you if you drop him a line.

Good luck.

Myron
