None of my spydies have any play, lock up in both directions are solid. I heard the new Endura 4 have an issue with slight vertical play. If your knife is new you might be able to send it back to spyderco for a replacement. Spyderco is pretty good with warranty. No quality folder should have any up/down play in the blade, it may compromise the locking mechanism. I saw a youtube vid where a guy had a endura and the lock completely failed , he could close the blade without disengaging the lock.

He's an idiot for doing it and completely broke the locking notch on the blade off. The way spyderco designed the backlock it's more secure but normal to have small amount of up/down play
