I just bought my first axe... and I don't have a fire! Atlas Trade 4½lb axe.

I went into a store this evening looking for something else and saw these Atlas Trade 4½lb axes on clearance for $15NZD (less than $10USD). I couldn't leave the store without buying one. Heckydern, cheap axes or even just handles cost at least three times that here. It's made in China but has a 25 year warranty.
I picked the best looking one out of the three left - the grain lines were closer together (which I figured might be stronger :think:) and run almost vertical, although it does run out a little on the sides in some places.



It's nothing fancy but most of my garden tools are this brand and I am happy with them. Feels OK in the hand although I am yet to give it a proper swing.
Oh and it kinda matches my Bahco hatchet.  :D

$10 even in American dollars is a steal. Our local stores would want something like $20-25 for a comparable axe, even with Chinese origin. From the design of the head, it looks quite sturdy. My first axes were actually free--rusted up old beaters (all older True Temper/Kelly; some dating to the early 1900s) I found scattered around a property we leased at the time that I still use, though they have mostly been replaced by a Ochsenkoph made Stihl 800 gram hatchet. Most I screwed up learning to sharpen, and ended up making them blunt. Hope with those goof-ups I didn't mess up the heat treat since I largely used a Dremel.   Granddad gave me an old bench grinder, and I'm using my old China and India made el-Cheapos to practice reprofiling them.

Down here they are $30 on clearance.
Went to three shops, looked through approx 20 of them but couldn't find one that had both a good handle and a good head.
Looked through the smaller ones, also the hatchets, not a single good example.

Handle shapes, grain lines, handle to head fit, head shapes, head grinds etc.
