So do I! But I guess it's pretty close to what we just call toast here in Sweden? But we do them in like a waffle iron but for sandwiches

Interchange "grill" with "griddle" I'd guess.  Both basically a hot plate.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

We call those toasted sandwiches.

I believe in Scotland a grilled cheese sandwich is called a "wee toastie" - can anyone confirm?  :dunno:

Doesn't have to be "wee" but definitely a "toastie".  Does suggest a sealed sandwich made in a toastie maker though.

Now I am starving too

I've made "grilled" cheese in the toaster oven before, which I suppose is almost like broiling. If you put a slice of cheese on each piece of bread and then join them after the toasting/broiling it works quite well.

And now I want a grilled cheese too. With a bowl of tomato soup, of course  :gimme:

The grilled cheese, when well made, is a real thing of luxury and deliciousness.

It's called "grilled" cheese because....and I know this is a bit confusing...in a diner it is made on the flattop grill, the US version of a plancha.

This is a "grill man" working a grill:

Not to be confused with with the cooking device found in most American backyards, also called....a grill....

The home cook, desperate for a late night snack, will use a cast iron pan to make a grilled cheese sammie, thereby replicating the classic diner's grill surface. Other pans can be used, even the backyard charcoal grill, but that crisp, crunchy crust and soft, cheese, gooey interior is best accomplished with a cast iron skillet or griddle.

Let me recommend adding some cooked bacon and a thin slice of tomato to the cheese middle of your next grilled cheese sandwich. Fantastic!

Nice example of someone using their charcoal grill to heat up a skillet to make a grilled cheese sandwich:

Any heat source will do, the cook in this case is just using his cast iron pan at home to replicate a diner's grill.

I love grilled cheese.

Some people think of grilled cheese as just melting cheese on toasted bread, but it is grilling a cheese sandwich in a pan or on a griddle or flattop.  The butter bread just gets so deliciously crispy in contrast with the gooey melted cheese.

Grilled ham and cheese, grilled spam and cheese, and grilled peanut butter and jelly are all also good.

SOS, you reminded me that a grilled Swiss cheese with strawberry jam is delicious.   :tu:

I never tried the grilled PB & J, but I have had PB & J on a cheeseburger. I can heartily recommend that and can imagine that a grilled PB & J would be a fine thing, too.

Does it have to be butter?

I've made grilled cheese using olive oil. Worked for me, give it a shot!   :tu:

Has to be real butter not that fake oleo stuff & a thick slice of dill pickle with every bite. Not on the sammich now, take a bite of sammich then throw in the slice of pickle. Best thing ya ever slid down that old banana chute. :gimme:
