Let us all not forget the magnitude of this day on the beaches 75 years ago..  :salute:

I'm watching an excellent program at the moment on BBC4 - Normandy:The Battle Beyond D-Day. Unusually for the BBC, it seems to be very accurate, to the point and free of revisionist crap. Well worth watching on Iplayer, if you can get it.

Another excellent program on now - Ben Macintyre's Double Cross: the True Sorry of the D-Day Spies. He's an excellent and rather eccentric author and broadcaster and very engaging to watch.  :tu:

Got to visit Omaha beach when I was a wee lad. I remember going through some small towns that had bullet marks in the stonework on some of the buildings. I'll have to have a look and see what pics I have  if I can find them.

Lest we forget  :hatsoff:.

When I was 17 years old (back in '94), me and two of my friends visited Normandy one month before the big 50 Years Anniversary of the landing.  We spend 5 days there and it was one of the most impressive things I've seen right up to this moment.

I always thought we would remember these mind blowing events for ever, as a kid I spend hours listening to the stories told by my grand parents about World War II, one of my grandfathers even told stories about World War I, even though he was only 6 or 7 years old during World War I.

But when I see or hear the lack of interest some of the young people show in these turning points in European history, I fear the worst.  Luckily, not all of the youngsters are like that, so there's still hope ...

Yes, I care ...

My girlfriend was ignorant so I explained all I knew.
The poster I showed earlier was the only souvenir I brought home.

I should have a pic of Aromanches somewhere too...

Ok I’m confused, you were 17 during 94, yet 6-7 during WW1

Probably dropped a "great".
I came along like 20 years after T-G, and I've got pictures of me with my (Spanish) great-grandparents, who were born in the 30's.
Europeans.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Now I understand what he meant ...

I'm talking about my grandfather, who was born in 1912, and was 6 when World War I ended (yet he could tell very detailed stories about it, guess kids grow up a lot faster in times like that).

Just to be clear, my father was born in 1948, and I was born in 1977, and my oldest son was born in 2005  ;).

@ Nick: That's one awesome poster, a true icon ... And I love the "Big Red 1" badge  ;)

I found the badge on a fleamarket a few weeks later... I couldn't pass it up.

I also remember an old man, obviously well aged but still in relatively good shape...
Standing at the side of the Promenade in Aromanches dressed in a WW2 uniform and some medals ...
Smiling from ear to ear while watching families walk on by...
I still regret not shaking his hand and thanking him for his service. But the image is burned in my mind...

The US graveyard is... Undescribable.
But let's not forget the German one either. It's massive too, and most of them were husbands, sons, fathers and brothers too, made to choose between fighting a war that wasn't theirs, or to die in a work camp.
I can not respect their side of the battle, but their deaths touch me none the less.
