Woods Super Tinker SAK 91mm
on:
October 28, 2019, 06:34:03 PM
I built my brother a custom SAK over the weekend.
He wanted a Warnclif blade, along with a large blade and a small blade. Having two blade layers gave me an opportunity to incorporate both the Phillips and corkscrew on the back layer. Long story short, we decided on a sheepsfoot made from a large blade instead of a Warnclif for ease of build.
Many thanks to Syph, comis, Max Stone & Aimless Wanderer for the information, hints, tips and tricks I needed to take on this build.
On to the build…

The Phillips would occupy the space on the back of the 2nd blade layer and the space on the back of the scissors layer, so the first step was to cut the tang from the hook for use as a spacer. The Dremel made short work of this.

To get the Phillips to sit flush in between the liners, I used a .040” liner next to the second blade layer. This gave me an extra .010” to let the Phillips sink in. As comis advised, I cut the liner to match the scissors back spring. Then I ground the Phillips to accommodate the hump on the scissors back spring. I figured the remaining steel on the Phillips driver would still be stronger than the 2.2mm pin that holds it in position, and I definitely did not want to mess with grinding the scissor back spring.

After an assembly trial, I found that the Combo Tool in the 2nd blade layer was catching on the liner, so I cut the top to match a standard blade layer liner.

.040" thick liner and Phillips installed. So far, so good. I did not get a picture, but I did end up grinding the next liner to add a divot on the back side so I could reach the Phillips to open it.

The next layer was the saw. On the back side, my brother wanted an awl instead of a chisel or small driver. Since the saw and back spring are only .070” and the awl is .080” I had to grind some off the face. I locked it in my Vice Grips as shown to grind it on my belt sander. I touched it up by hand with 320-600-1500-3000 grits to get a nice finish.

That’s a great build chewbacca.
Definitely need more 91mm blade variety!
I’m on the hunt for a serrated blade to do a similar build. Thinking of an inline awl paired to the 1st blade, combo on the 2nd blade, inline Phillips/mag on the third and finishing with scissors.
Maybe CyberTool instead of inline Phillips. Just not as ‘classic’ as the inline Phillips.

Thanks Max!
I just picked up a Serrated Spartan used on eBay. I am really torn...sharpen it and keep it for my collection, or take it apart and build something like an Original (Marlboro) Outdoorsman.
BTW - I really liked your Outdoorsman custom build.

Thanks guys. I think the next thing up is an 84mm with pink translucent scales for my lovely wife...I have a couple of old 84mm Tinkers that are begging to be torn apart
