Ranger Challenge!
on: June 12, 2019, 11:27:23 PM

We've done a few Buck 110 challenges. They are in the books. ('though I think we're going to do another one come April 2020.....)

Now it's time to break new ground and celebrate a less iconic--perhaps more useful--knife: the Buck 112.

You guys know I love the 110, but I have to concede that pound for pound1, the mighty 112 might be the more capable knife.  And they make a lighter, slim version.....

The origins of the 112 Ranger are somewhat speculative, but may have been influenced by a Navy Captain banning the 110 from his ship after too many sailors used their 110 to poke holes in each other. When the 110 was banned, Buck developed the 112 to meet the harsh Captain's standards.

And a new Buck legend was born.

I have to say, the 112 is a real gem. A bit easier to carry than the 110, but it still offers a great grip, dependable lock, and excellent blade. Even with my big hands, the 112 is a bit easier to choke up on and use for fine work. I know many people prefer the 112 to the 110. I'm not sure I'm one of those people, but....I'm willing to find out.

So, let's run a 112 challenge. We're overdue.

We've got a few other challenges pending, but November, December,....even January are open. Vote for the month you'd like to do the challenge in. Whichever month gets the most votes will be our challenge month. (If you think Santa might bring you a 112 for Christmas, vote for January....ho, ho, ho.)

I always thought the 112 was a more practical size, I never under stood why the 110 has always been much more popular.
The biggest folder I'll carry is 4 1/4" so the 112 fits the bill size wise. I do have alternatives to the 112 either slip joints or liner locks, they don't have that classic 112 style.
I have been a fan of the 501.

I've got a '74-80 that someone really beat the blade up on. Not only is it sharpened heavily, there's a big ding in it. Which means, that if I sharpen it out, there will be no blade left; so Buck will probably have to replace the blade.  So I'm in, just got to send that 112 to Idaho. Else, I'll probably be getting a 112LT before long.

There are 112LTs as well, and they're not that expensive (my local knife store lists the 112LT at $22; while the standard 112 is $48). I would have already got one, but I'm waiting to see if Silver Knight blades releases a scaled down, 112LT version of the CPM-154 110LT Smokejumper and Shield.  Got the Shield last year for my birthday (which is in November, the month I chose), and am hoping there will be 112LT-based versions by that time this year.

Great knife just a wee bit heavy to pocket carry though.

Probably won't do the challenge unless it's in early fall.

Put me down for participating.  I had been thinking about picking up a Buck 112 or 55, before being sidetracked by a Sodbuster Jr.  i’m sure I can get one by January. The big question will be whether to go traditional or more modern.

Well, the Ranger is a Navy-inspired knife, so you NEED one.

I like the traditional 112's, but have my eye on one of the new Slim Ranger Pro models.

You are such an enabler!

(Image removed from quote.)

You are such an enabler and are trying to play on my weakness.

The Ranger Pro is sweet, but just like the slim, they don’t seem like Bucks to me.

I like that Navy model!!!

The Navy Sodbuster Jr is becoming one of my favorite knives.
