Hey all,

If you have a Leatherman Rebar - can you see what appears to be a cast line between the tip and the shaft of the Philips driver?

Was just slightly worried I might have received a fake?!?

I’ve attached photos to illustrate.

Thanks  :multi:

Is that like an open gap?
I'll find my Rebar and report back  :salute:

Edit, here it is:
I only see a little of that on top-side on mine.
I assume it's injection moulded which often needs some refinements afterwards (removing overstands, edges etc.).

QA issue?

Hey Matt,

Thanks for checking! Seems like it’s just QA, and not a dodgy fake then!

Mine has the marks all around - tbh, it looks a little like the top is very slightly offset, but if it’s within tolerances and not an indicator of weakness, I’m fine with that :)

On a side note - when you have the awl open, do your pliers scrap against and push between the two flat heads either side of it when closing the tool (with the awl still open)?

Mine do and the pliers take some scratches from the two flat heads..

Does seem like LM’s QA isn’t quite what it’s once was. Like many brands, I suppose..

Cheers

Hey thanks Loopcutter! Really kind of you to take the time to do that  :salute:

Looks like yours have a little marking on the sides, but not on the top or bottom sides..

Do you think the fact that mine looks a little more offset (on top and bottom sides) indicates any weakness in the mould?

Thanks

That's normal yes, the Rebar doesn't have these little posts in the middle inside the handle, like the Wave does. Therefore the awl/phillips take care of guiding the pliers when folding back in.
But I cannot fully reproduce it with mine cause I've modded it with scissors  :D

Oh fair enough. Good to know though :)

That’s sounds cool! What did you swap out for the scissors??  :climber:

Any of you guys/gals with a Rebar and ST300 - which do you prefer and why?

For every day carry I prefer the Rebar. You don’t even notice it’s there. For around the house I use my ST300 quite a bit.

The lanyard-ring (don't need it) and a spacer (introduced some tool clumping though).

PS: Meanwhile I swapped places for the file and saw to get the scissors out easier.

That’s a brilliant mod, Matt!  :like: Nicely illustrated, too.

Btw, is there any way to stop the Rebar’s saw from pulling out the Philips driver and other tools when unfolding it? Is that what clumping is?

Thanks, I guess that makes sense. Any advantage of the ST300 over the surge?

I don’t know. I have both. The ST300 is a no nonsense tool. I guess I favor it because I carried one for awhile while in the Marine Corps. The on I have now is black oxide and well broken in, so I can just flip the pliers open.

Yes, that's clumping. Some like it and some not. It can make it easier to pick the tool you need.
It can be avoided by adding slim spacers between the tools.
The Rebar only has a spacer between the knife blades and next tool, to avoid accidental deployment of the knifes.
So basically, it's normal what you reported.

That makes sense then. It definitely feels unrefined comparered to my Wave, but if it’s normal, fair enough. Will it ease up over time?

Some use, and keeping it well lubed, could reduce it slightly. :tu:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Rebar.

Easy multitool to carry, and does most everything a ST can.  The Rebar is one of my favorite multitools.   :tu:

I really luv my REBAR(s) and love my ST300.  I like my Wave.

All 3 see regular Pocket time.

The Rebar is #1 for me because of the tool set onboard and the size. Can sheath carry, (prefer the box style), or pocket carry in rear pocket with or without a sheath (use the flat nylon style).

The ST300 is #2 for the tool set, and there are times you just need a bigger tool, it is so familiar as well as comfortable for me.

The WAVE sees action often at my PT job at the Y. SS finish stands up to the chemicals I work with around the pools. Nd the OHO blades makes it easier when cutting down cardboard for recycle bin and opening the 50# Bicarb bags for treating pool water.
