Farmer X mod.
on: June 23, 2019, 12:28:54 PM
So, I've gathered all I need.

2 donors, pin stock and some guts.

I'll probably build it without torx screws.
The sourcing of M2 screws seem to be a hassle here and my dad is currently lacking the time to drill and thread the pins.

3mm rods ✓, 2.5mm rods ✓

How much will they need to protrude before peening?
About 1mm like with 91mm models?

I hope to start today or later this oncoming week.

If it was me, I would try slightly more than 1mm first. You can always grind some off!
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

This will be interesting  :like:

I'd say 1mm is enough, though I couldn't argue with Pabs either.
I guess it depends on how you would like to have the pins end shaped then. Kinda half-round? Or flat (like the famous Masterwaiter)?

I am wondering about the same question too.

Really am no expert here, but I just tested with 1mm and 0.7mm on each side of the alox yesterday and today.  The 0.7mm per side felt like there's insufficient material to full up the rivet/countersink hole, and 1mm looks ok, but kinda flat.  As a reference, I did the 91mm peening practice today as well, and found that 0.5mm(per side) actually works quite well, it should fill up the countersink and almost flush against the bushing once it is done.

After alot of taps:

My backside peens are a bit larger than the front ones. But at least they're consistent on each side.

I will probably polish them off somewhere during the week. For now, I'm just glad I was able to finish it on a single afternoon.

Any thoughts on my peening so far are greatly appreciated. Bear in mind this was my first full mod :D

Mechanical, that was really nicely done!  You are a natural!  :like:

So for your mod, how much did you leave on each side?  1mm?

I peened the first halves while the rods were in a vise. I test fitted them in the front scale every now and then. I left about about a mm for the backside but went more by feeling than measurements :D

Thank you, it really does look well done. :tu:  Please do keep us posted on longer term use, some would say pre-peening may loosen up over time, and I am just on the fence whether to try this or not.

Great job! Ive been wanting to try this for a long time but have always chickened out.

I definitely agree that victorinox is missing a trick here not offering this as a factory model.

Are the pins you used nickel silver or solid brass?

Is that a hand drill in the second photo? How did you find removing the stock pins without a drill press?

I like the fact that you didn't damage anything taking it apart.  :tu:

Everything looks solid, but won't be mistaken for factory assembly.

Most people seem to think that the factory rivets on 93mm knives are peened that way. They are certainly not.

The pins are Nickel Silver and I got them in a trade.

I did use a hand drill to make for the initial pit in the rivets. I was able to make sure the drill didn't shift by hand.

After that I moved it into the drill press.
