Would you have paid $8 for this?
on: July 01, 2019, 03:49:56 PM
One day, I bought a knife on eBay that I had been looking for, it was mint in box and a decent price.  I looked at his other items and he had this (his photos)..$7.99 free shipping.

I don't know why I bought it except, I guess I wanted to help the seller with more cash as the "Mint" one he sold me was so nice and reasonably priced.

Sometimes I am a little ashamed of the purchases I make.

Since you are a collector of MINT in BOX specimens, its neat to have one not so mint  ;)

Thank you Wspeed.   I do like the corkscrew on it, and the scales seem to be non-cellidor, or maybe they're just worn in.

My 1902 Officer's knife is showing it's age and use too, but it's still a 1902...

Sometimes you have to be glad you were able to get an antique, regardless the condition.
And like you say yourself: keep it untill a better example comes along ;)

Yes, I'd have bought that in a heart beat!

The condition is what's soooo good about it. It's obvious to a blind man, that knife gave someone, perhaps a couple of someone's, a lifetime of good serve and companionship. If it could only tell the stories it must have!!!!

Sadly, I would buy it for the same reasons you did.  And for the spare parts.

Heck yeah I would have! It isn't the prettiest, but at least it's filler and you can tell someone used it heavily. I have a 1942 Soldier in not much better shape, and I gave $20 for it. I've theorized someone used it to break out of a German POW camp during the war. And besides, with it being so rough, I tote it every now and then. I wish the "Farmer's and Soldier's Knives"  would return, with carbon steel implements.  All we get today is the gardener's knives, and only a couple have more than one blade; and are built around horticulture.

I'd also pay $8 for it. Looks like it is barely broken in. :D

Hello all, thank you so much for the replies.  I actually love this little user knife.  It is so unlike the ones I generally buy.  I've kept it as received.
For some reason it comforts me to have it, plus it pleases me that others would have considered it too at eight dollars.  :hatsoff:

I’ve done the same. I’d like to see some love returned to that knife. A polish and sharpening maybe. A pimp my knife sort of thing.

That's because most won't realize what this scale is 'worth' even in poor shape:

It's one of the few (from this era) that doesn't have an awl in it. Perhaps not super rare, but easily worth $8 on it's own. JMO.

A clean and sharpen and you've got a knife with who knows what history.  I might be someone who also likes to think of all the possibilities in a tools life.  What has it seen, who or how many before me owned it, where did it spend its life and in what countries, etc etc.

I bought a Wenger with a pretty well worn blade.  I loved the age of the knife and all the possibilities of its previous life, even the ones I may have made up  ;)

Here's the Soldier I was talking about. Even with its age and the condition; it still has among the strongest springs I've ever had on a knife. First time I opened the screwdriver, it tore up my left thumbnail.  The guy selling this knife often has some pretty interesting stuff on Etsy (and he has had some rare SAKs). His pricing is weird. He'll sell a very rare, old knife for next to nothing all the while selling a common and inexpensive knife for much more than its worth.
