Stargazer badge request
on: July 09, 2019, 08:43:16 AM
So I am not much of a stargazer...but it is a badge that needs done
And I have been putting it off.

Honestly I cant find the North Star without help. There are a few familiar constellations I can readaly ID but not many. Planets on the other hand I can just look up and see that is not a star. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have been viewable for me in the past year. Mabey longer and I never noticed.

As I am not an astronomy buff my only telescope is my Tasco 20-60 spotting scope for the rifle range. It isnt much, but for the supermoon or that close pass of Jupiter were you could see its moons with low power optics it was ok.

My go to star map is the SkyMap app which uses you phones gps and onboard sensors to tell where you are pointing and whats there.

The SAK in the pic is my old Vic ChampionPlus

And the 2 star pics are street views(no optics) of Jupiter ( Antares is a visable fleck ) and Saturn (I think)

Congrats on getting the badge!
I like astronomy a lot but there's just too much light polution here to be able to see anything cool. I used to make bicycle rides in the evening a bit away from my hometown and things were a bit better then. But with the naked eye I've only spotted Venus, Jupiter, the ISS, some nice constellations and Messier objects and Mars, but other than that nothing too exciting.
Oh I did take a pic of Jupiter from outside my window a few days ago.
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.
