Badge Request: Scale Changer
on: July 15, 2019, 03:07:57 AM
I hereby request a Scale Changer badge for which I present this modest offering. As it was my first wood scales attempt, I sourced a used Spartan off of the ‘bay with an engraved name ($6). I used African mahogany (probably used at most $2 of wood) and finished it with mineral oil (already using it as multitool oil anyway). It was created with a jigsaw, coping saw, detail sander, sandpaper, and drill. Despite its humble origins, I think this project turned out nicely.  :tu:

This whole badge stuff is so awesome. You should get a badge for requesting a badge.

That’s a goal for my second set of wooden scales, the first one didn’t include slots for scale tools. I’m also thinking about how to finish it to get a nice durable shine. Shellac?

I would recommend a Tung Oil Finish. I always apply three layers and lightly buff it with the finest steel wool I have in between. Makes for a nice finish  :tu:
