SAK scissors save a life.
on: September 11, 2019, 08:33:54 PM
Okay, relax, it was nothing spectacular, no car crashes or flaming wreckage.

I went out in the yard on the gravel and stone walkway to the workshop building out back. Really, I was just going to paint a bird bath stand for the better half. By the workshop, I noticed movement in the plastic mesh I had lined our iron fence with. This past August our granddaughter and accompanying 5 month old Boston terrier had visited. I had put up the mesh on the fence to contain the hyper active puppy as he could go right through the uprights of our iron fence. Its fine stuff, almost like plastic fishnet. I hadn't taken it down yet.

Caught in the fine mesh was a lizard. A Texas spiny lizzard about 4 or 5 inches long, and he was pretty tangled up in the stuff. Some thrashing around and mouth wide open painting as some of it was tangled around his neck.

As much as he was thrashing, I didn't dare use a knife, but the small SAK scissors did nicely. I held on to him, and kept the scissors mostly closed so I could just wiggle the tip under each plastic stand of the mesh that had him entangled. He actually cooperated a bit by holding a bit more still as I snipped carefully. I got his legs free, but the several strands around his neck was a problem. It was digging onto the scales under his neck, so I used the one side of the scissors to wiggle it down under the stands on the back of his neck and snipped.

With  the last plastic strands cut, he jumped out of my hand and scurried away in the grass towards the ivy bed by the back fence. He moved fast enough that I'm sure he was unharmed by the experience.

As tangled up as he was, there was no way I could have used even a small knife. The small SAK scissors were like a surgical tool that let me snip each individual strand of plastic one at a time to free the lizard.

No great drama, but I feel good about the little creature I got to save. The mesh is now gone.

Thanks folks. It was rewarding in a great way to free up some little creature caught up in a net of mesh. I'm just thankful that I had SAK scissors. It was a slightly bizarre situation and I can't think of any other cutting tool that would cut the plastic mesh so well, yet be harmless for the lizard. Even pointy scissors like surgical scissors would not have been as good. The shape of the SAK scissors was as good as I could hope.

In all the 50 years I've been carrying and using Victorinox SAK's, this was most definitely the most unusual use of the SAK scissors that I ever had.

Of course now that I've looked up the Texas Spiny blizzard, it say they make good pets and they get very used to be handled. He was a handsome fella with silver-gray scales fading to a lighter gray blue on his belly. It was weird how when I was snipping mourned his neck, it was like he held really still while I helped him. I guess I'll always wonder if he had a sense that he was being helped.

Its times like this that I look back on my SAK carrying and I'm glad that I always had a small pocket knife once that has some tool capability. Even the little classic I carried for 20 some years, had the little SD tip that felt fine with small Phillips screws, scissors, file and the small knife blade.

SAK's definitely give you options in weird situations.
