Crazy hybrid SAK...is it possible?
on: December 22, 2008, 02:29:10 PM
OK, I dont know where this idea came from, but its probably due to the fact that I woke up at 4:30 AM and have been looking at alllll different kinds of SAK's all morning, and they mashed together into this "Victorinox Frankenstein" idea haha.  What I'm mostly looking for is some input from you guys wether or not this configuration would be possible.

91mm Celluloid Vic SAK frame
LAYERS:
Large Blade / in-line reamer (ala Alox Soldier)
Magnifier/ in-line philips
Combo tool (bottle/can opener) / serrated "gutting" blade (ala 110mm Vic Hunter)
Corkscrew on the back
Make it a "Plus" while you're at it with the pen, pin, mini screwdriver ::)

So what do you guys think?  I know its kind of allllll over the flippin place, but after looking at about 100 different SAK's, this is something that poped into my head as "desirable" for me haha.

Make the main blade OH opening and in both locking and non locking versions for UK guys.

I do like the design as is though.

I think it should be possible, but Bill, Spork or Neil would know better.

I don't think you'll get a gutting blade from a 111mm frame opposite a combo tool.  Sorry.

If you look at a Hunter you'll see that layer has no gap between it and the blade isn't crinked so I don't see any way of bringing them closer together on a 91mm frame.

Of course with files and a grinder anything might be doable :)

Nothing to stop you having a 91mm serrated blade opposite a combo tool though.

Thats not a bad idea at all man.  I really like the idea of having plain and serrated blades, but that hunter tool is just awesome with the recurve.  Makes cutting rope and stuff muuuuch easier.

So lets say, Gutter would be preferable, but serrated blade a very close second

The Gutting blade will work on the 91mm opener layer spring and the pivot hole is the right size. The problem is finding a tool for the opposite end to work with it.

Does that combination work Dave?  I don't have a loose gutting blade to fiddle with.

Haven't really pursued it, it wasn't that interesting of a mod to me  :P ...there was some issue that came up, but I don't remember what it was. BTW, that is a Wenger Phillips...it had to be opened first before opening the gutting blade.

The magnifying glass is much shorter than the philips driver, do you think the gutting hook could work in combination with the magnifier in a layer?  Very nice pics though, I really like the idea of a gutting hook in a 91mm.

That is a Wenger Phillips in the photos above...slightly shorter than a Victorinox Mag glass. There would also be no room for the nose of the gutting blade...you can see how much it overlaps in the first photo above.

Ohhh ok i gotcha.  What about switching things around a bit

Large Plain Blade / Combo Tool
Gutting Blade / Awl

You think the awl would be able to clear it?

There's no crink in the gutting blade or the inline awl...you'd have to put in thick spacers and have a thicker or doubled up backspring to offset the blades.

Looking at it from another direction, you could always take a standard 91mm blade and reprofile/serrate it to create a gutting hook.  Just an idea.

Not by enough to make any difference and not as short as on the Wenger.
