My new SOG PowerLock S63
on: December 22, 2008, 07:54:26 PM
First of all: yessss!!! :D
At last I have in my hands one of the famous SOG MTs.
In  many areas it´s more than I expected. For example I like very much its polished finish and its design overall is very different from the competitors and I like that a lot.
It opens sooo smooth that even my wife liked it, a friend of mine has the LM Surge and she remembered opening it wasn´t so easy as this SOG (even so I would like to get a Surge someday).
All the tools seem like they work fine except may be for the file that I don´t like too much, I haven´t tried any tool here yet but the file doesn´t feel as good as the one in my Spirit. Subjective opinion in any case.
The piano keys locking system is interesting but I don´t know if it´s better than having just one lock per side like the older ones. What do you SOG owners think?
The locks for the saw and the file for example doesn´t completely lock when I pull them out, they need a bit of help. The side where are the knife, V cutter, etc work fine.
For what I´ve seen the handle covers are necessary in this MT but they don´t fit in the handles as they should,  or is it only in my SOG? I mean you have to push them in place and they tend to get out, specially one side.
Despite these details I like this MT a LOT, it feels strong in your hand and I´m sure it will perform well.
Now I have membership in all four clubs :multi: :multi: :multi: :multi:

Hi tanker.  Thanks for posting your comments and photos of the new S63.

I have the original S60 and removed the handle covers.  They get in the way, make the tool heavier, and I don't really need them.   They fit somewhat sloppy, too.

Be sure to post more comments as you use the S63 for more tasks.

If you do, make sure you get a 2.0 version! You will not be impressed by the 1.0!

eh!??! There's plenty of people who love the "old" Powerlock, me included, it's not that different to the new one! Gear covers, new head and piano locks....not like it's a revolution in design ??? ???

Well, the older design sucks IMO! The blade or any tool on that handle won't lock on the knife blade side if the bottle opener is not flush with the rest of the tools in the handle... Or, the gears, I tried to unscrew a rusted screw w/ them and it was a very uncomfortable experience!

You think the Powerlock 1.0 sucks, I think the Surge sucks....guess we'll have to agree to disagree :)

How long will be able to resist taking it apart do you think? :P

Sure thing parnass. :tu:

I removed the handle covers as well just to apply some good pressure over it and I put them back them in place. They do help not hurting your fingers...it´s not much but they help in my opinion.

Thanks to Benner, I currently have Defender's SOG Switchplier thingy in my hand right now! It's my first proper look at SOG, and whilst the Switchplier has limited functionality compared to the tools I actually buy, I love the innovative design.

I feel a thread coming on, but suffice it to say, handling this SOG has moved my interest in owning a SOG powerplier up at least one notch. In fact I'm past desire and heading towards lust...

Anyone want to sell one cheap?   :D

Oh and Def - I can't seem to find your switchplier, I'm sure it was around here earlier
