I recently acquired a NIB Trail Guide on the 'bay. I wasn't certain of whether I would EDC it or keep it on the shelf.

Why, EDC of course! I have a yeoman mod in the three-layer camp, but there's something about the width / heft of the trail guide that feels right. The metal saw is in the dead center layer too, which definitely helps with ergos.

Plus scales are a treat as well, even if I have explain the marlboro stamp : D

Does add a certain...character...to the knife, though.

Why is the trail guide not made anymore? Lots of the combo tool SAKs seem really sensible, like this one and the 84mm Golfer!

After much thought and various Swiss Army Knives (that I still have - I’m not crazy), I bought this. I hope it’s as great of an at home knife as I expect. Cross your eyes for 3D, or don’t. Anyway, here it is with toys, etc. for fun.

For my work EDC I need something to replace my ancient (lockmaker's or gearcutters) file.

It's knife shaped in cross section. This old file has got me out of more scrapes than almost all my other tools.

So, while it might not be a popular model, count me as a new addition to the Mountaineer Files!

Okay it's been 12 months! :o I have carried the Mountaineer every day at work. Here's a quick recap.

I have used every tool at least once (except toothpick and tweezers).

I have only used the file to actually file a couple of times but have used it to saw plastic and as a long reach screwdriver many times.

It's been dropped a few times. Once from about 15ft onto concrete :-[

And recently went for a spin in the washing machine ::)

I think if this was alox it would be my perfect work EDC

I much prefer the file over the wood saw, myself.  Last year, the VSAKS custom model was a 93mm alox Electrician with a metal file/saw added.  I was so excited.  I managed to pick up a second for EDC when not all were claimed.  It would be a nice replacement for the current Electrician in the line-up, in my opinion, instead of just swapping the small blades as do between so many models now.  I would not be adverse to an X, but carry a 58mm alox MiniChamp with it.  I have to remove a couple less-used tools from the MC to thin it some, though.  Oh, that VSAKS came in a brilliant blue.
My Mods: 58mm Workshop, 91mm Picnicker, CyberCompact
Some Fav's: long nail file models, vintage unusual stainless
Quirk: I like the metal file more than the wood saw
