Factory service for a 108 mm GAK?
on: September 13, 2019, 11:01:40 PM
I have a nice GAK in very decent shape, except that when I went to clean it the other day it didn't survive the process and emerged with a broken spring.   If I send it back to Victorinox, will they repair the spring and re-attach the scales?   I can't decide what to do, and I don't want to lose the knife even it is replaced with some modern equivalent.

Here are some pics I just took of it next to my 34 year old Safari.

Thanks,

Myron

Best bet?

Email Victorinox and ask them directly.

I did so for an 84mm with scissors of which the backspring broke and they checked with the service dept so I wouldn't send it in for no reason.

:hatsoff:

They usually reply within 2 business days.

In my case, service dept confirmed they had a new backspring for me and that I could send it in.

To be sure, I'd add a note when sending it over that the knife has sentimental value and should not be replaced with another.

I sent in a handful of 108mms to Vic USA, one of them did have a broken back spring and they forwarded them to Ibach for repair.  I haven’t gotten them back yet, but that might be what happens to yours.  I have sent some back with blade damage and they replace it with a clip point blade, at least in the USA.

Well, Victorinox got right back to me with an answer, but so far the news is not good.   I supplied a brief description of the problem along with the following picture:

The customer service rep wrote me back to say that, "Based on the photo provided, this does not look like a Victorinox Swiss Army item."

So I have now replied explaining in a little more detail that it was produced by Victorinox for the German government and is the same knife as the contemporaneous Safari.  I added this photo just in case there is still doubt.

But in thinking about their reply a little more, I think what they were really saying is that they don't service Bundeswehr articles even when they were originally made by Victorinox.

Bummer.

Simyo, were any of the knives you sent back Bundeswehr issue?

Thanks,

CSR has replied (very quickly) and says he will check with the service center and see if they have repair parts for this model.   Fingers crossed.

Sorry for the delay, I sent a few troopers in.  In the past the US service center would replace the damaged blades with unengraved clip point blades.  My recent ones had damaged scales, saws, and blades.  These had to go back to ibach.  It takes much longer, I think it took about 3 months compared to 1 month in the US.  However, they were returned in the slip cases new scales(all bund scales) and new normal blades, however the saws had the combotool reshaped(so I’m assuming they’re out of replacement saw parts).  I hope that helps.  Feel free to shoot me a dm if you need help and I’m not responding here.

Thanks Simyo!

I sent in the GAK after a few emails back and forth with the VSA customer service rep convincing him that it was in fact a Victorinox product.  They said they would send it to Ibach for repair, and that it would take months to turn around.  I haven't heard anything since (it's only been about 5-6 weeks), but I do have the email from VSA with a case number.

I hope they just repair the spring and leave everything else as is, although I guess if they unnecessarily replace the main blade with a clip point blade that would just become part of this knife's story.

I actually have a set of brand new 108 mm red scales, so if I ever find a beater 108 that I want to rescue I'll be all set scale-wise.  :)

Thanks again, Simyo!

Myron

Hi Shadowrider,

There's a "contact us" form on their main website that I used.  Couldn't be simpler.

Good luck,

Myron

Thanks Myron, I thought there was a special top-secret repair team email address that needed to be contacted. Glad to know it is not the case.

The repairs done at the us center would get a clip point but back to ibach and it would be like new for the most part.

The US Vic site also has a chat box to talk to reps during normal business hours.  Also, if you send stuff in and they have issues they’ll call you and you can ask all the questions.  That’s how I managed to get a super timer repaired to like new condition.

From my experience, the Vic repair department will awlways give you an estimate first, if there's any cost involved. After that, it may take some time but you get your SAK back as good as new.

Well, I have an update.   I got an email from Victorinox saying that my GAK had to go back to the mothership in Switzerland for repair, and that I'd be receiving a separate quote for the cost of the service.  I haven't actually received the quote itself yet, but I'm looking forward to continuing the process!

And we're back!  The FedEx man delivered my repaired GAK to me today, and it is like-new.  Broken spring replaced, original knife blade restored to almost-new edge and polished, and the scales replaced with correct Bundeswehr new ones.  Everything came packaged up in a little Victorinox drawstring pouch.  It's all very nice.  About 3.5 months from start to finish.

Hats off to Victorinox for such outstanding customer service!

Myron

Looks great, I sent my motorist off on the 15th sept and I’m on tenter hooks waiting for it to come back.
My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

Bumped!  I've been looking for this article for advice on my GAK.  The blade looks like it was sharpened with an alternator pulley.  For a woods knife it's hard to beat, so slim and easy to pocket carry.  I hope to have similar success getting mine repaired.  Myron, would you mind giving me an approximate cost?

If you submit the form on the website than it’s usually just $5-$6.
