Leatherman Blade Notches

Has anyone else noticed the notches on the backside of Leatherman knife blades? I see them on the Wave, Charge, and Surge tools. They are only on the backside of the serrated knife blades, not on the regular knife blades.

I assume these notches are to help a person distinguish which blade they are flicking out, without looking at it.

Notches like that are often found on knives so you can place your finger on  them for more precise control while cutting.

I figured they were just for quick blade identification too.

On regular knives that is exactly the case.  However, given the blade placement and the other handle that is on top of the blade, it makes it very hard to get any purchase there.

I'd never noticed those! Sure is nice to know though, as I've wanted to add an identification, so i didn't have to look when opening them.

makes me feel blind, that I didn't norice that they were just on one of the blades........

Tom is right as usual. They are for ID purposes. I use them all the time to find the blade I am looking for. Once you get used to the serr. blade having the notches it is allways quicker.

The Juice models have notches on the serrated blades as well

Now I'm the one feeling silly.......I hadn't noticed that before.

I'm trying to figure out when Leatherman started putting these identification notches on their blades. I've got an original Wave with Oct 99 date codes, and no notches. I also have an original Wave with chrome finish, date coded March 02, which DOES have notches.

So sometime in between is when they started. Based on date codes, can anybody help narrow it down any further?

I can't help much there.  My old Wave is marked 0302A.  And, it has the notches.

Which of course raises another question- what the heck is the A for?

My older '99 Wave just has the date codes, no letters. The newer one has codes of 0302A and 0502B.

It must be there is a difference between the two handles, so they have to distinguish them at assembly as A's and B's?

Possibly... but I don't see the difference myself, and wouldn't they be the same handles from old to new?
