Not sure if it’s really an error.
I’m guessing it’s just worn tools on the production line that couldn’t cut quite close enough and it left a bit of excess material on there.
They were only small flakes so just lightly scraped them off with some ceramic tweezers.

Thats how an unused saw of victorinox looks like, not an error. With scraping it of, you make it an used tool and decreased the value around 50 % :-)

Ohh... It's not an error, i can assure you...

All my saw's look like that before first use. After the first branch cut or two it's fine and clean

My new Camper looks the same, haven't had any saw use yet.

They’re for vaping, so I can fire it and adjust the coil at the same time, I assume metal ones would be a little shocking :D

Cheers for all the other responses, not had it on any of my new saws before.

And there are more obvious errors out there:

Super rare +PAT+ version of the can opener.

I guess this one didn't leave the jig before it got hit again!

So somewhere out there there might be a PAT stamp missing its '+'.

From another thread:

I took apart a compact the other day and the combo tool had been stamped from the thicker steel that the bottle opener and can opener would be made from.  It was so thick the sak was bulging at that end.  First time Id see that one.

2mm thick?  I have a Mechanic Jr that's the same. I always assumed it was 111mm combo tool that was used (intentionally or accidentally) and not a stamping error. Not sure what the pin diameter is on 111mm knives though - 2.5mm? 3mm? If the 111mm knives have bigger pins that would answer the question pretty easily.

It had a 2.5mm hole.  Was identical to a standard 91mm except for thickness.

Here is mine. The one in the middle. You can see basicly it should comes with a Malaysian army logo cause it's a special eddition but this one doesn't. It's a little bit unbelieverable because it's so obvious. They just let it be there and handed to Malaysia along with those ordinary pieces. :climber:

Good old scale tools swapped around. Had to be in a hurry, it's so obvious actually handling it that you've goofed up.

Funny how many times we see it in auction listings...but from a big dealer?  :o. Sad thing is that it looks like it was 'burned'/darkened a bit to hide the mistake! Funny what had to be done with film in those days...just to save the re-shoot.

OK my turn to play one of Kamakiri's guessing games - And the answer will be revealed - Not that you Knights will need any help to find it!

Here's an image of a seven layer Champion from the Wiki Champion page:
https://sakwiki.com/show_image.php?id=1393

Spot the error in the photograph.

And for a bonus point explain how this error came about. !!

It's a pre-'85 knife sans chisel?
Pre-'79 saw?

I think you've got it - Comparing text to image - Right? - Can you expand ?

And how did it come about?   - This is just my conjecture!

There's actually a lot to expand on...

The root cause is that photos like this weren't updated as changes were made. This is typical of almost all their printed material. In this case, based on the pic, the knife is c. '77/'78.  So there's a whole lot that changed between then and when chisels were introduced.

hump on the small SD
eye in the awl
90º stop on the caplifter
dropping to the tip grind on the awl
bevel on the mag glass
and some other stuff that's not visible in the pic...

Yep the answer I was looking for is - "When the chisel was introduced they used the picture from the previous guide in the updated tool guide"
- Just adding the chisel text to the guide, and a number on the diagram labeling a chisel that is not there!!   :o
Naughty, lazy Victorinox   :twak:

You can see both tool guides here:
https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Champion

The other changes would be less visible/obvious/important to a user! Although the hole in the awl is quite significant

EDIT: Kamakiri's observation on the catalogue page above and not re-shooting photos reminded me of this one!

Maybe a stretch on the definition of error...but this time, a copy of the ‘rare’ c. late ‘72 scaler with the first ruler markings. The bottom copy shows clear wear of the metric side numbering. The ‘1’ mark isn’t really visible.

I bought the pictured "Huntsman with Pouch" in a (sealed) blister pack some time ago on eBay (I like gifting them, so I usually keep at least one "in stock"). When it arrived, I first noticed what you can see in the first image: The SAK is improperly placed in the blister pack (it should be placed with the front scale being the visible one). Upon closer inspection, I discovered much bigger issues that can be seen in the second image:
  • The SAK is dirty.
  • The (visible) back scale is only partly attached (there is a big gap between the scale and the liner it's supposed to touch).
  • The front scale is completely missing (and I'm thus guessing that the tweezers are also missing).
So this is a seriously messed up SAK in a sealed blister pack.  ???  Not very common, I think (but seems to speak for itself about the imperfection of quality control at Victorinox). The question now is what should I do with it? If I'll keep it as is, I will be in possession of a somewhat unusual item, but will never know how messed up this SAK really is. If I'll open it, my curiosity will be satisfied, but I will likely end up owning nothing other than a messed up SAK (unless I'll discover some interesting defect other than dirt and a missing scale that could explain why the SAK is in this state). So...   What should I do?    :dunno: Opinions?
