I was talking to a few neighbors.
on: October 10, 2019, 04:20:19 PM
New guy moved in and came across the street to say hi.  My next-door neighbor was out smoking so the three of us started chatting.  One topic lead to another and they were talking knives  :D.  As I listened they seemed knowledgeable so I chimed in

Seems they carried CnC knives and back ups to boot.  I showed them what I was carrying since I was doing work on my house and had a few things on me.

BM Contego, Leatherman Ti, Older Wenger Handyman, Zebra light, and for good measure my large Case Sod Buster.

I think it was a case of info over load for them as I began to share my tools.  One guy carried Mtech and a Gerber MT.  The other had no idea what his knives were.  It was nice to chat a bit but I have to remember not everyone is as "INTO" knives as we are  :tu:

Nice, too bad they got a bit overwhelmed though
The guys at work think I'm a total nutter when it comes to knives, and it makes sense when I see what they have and how they use it

I totally get it.  Guess I was just stoked that they were taking knives.  I've got to remember sometimes its just causal conversation

Most of the time I get funny looks when
I show them a new knife I have just bought
And the question of why do you need that many knives  :D

Looking at my around the home carry Id think they'd just move along .

I would not carry as much otherwise.  I like to carry the tools I have when I know I'll remain at home doing projects.  Yesterday it was carpets, weather proofing, patching garage walls, checking roof, and some random things.

I did use my Dremil and Circular saw a lot yesterday and today will use my driver/drill and dedicated wire cutters.  I'm replacing all my soffit wire vents today and more weather proofing.  I have to cut out the excess foam sealant I put into some voids so my Sod Buster will get the call for that job.  We added a door sweep to our garage door last night.  I want to try to button up a few things that I've been lagging on.

I think you mean “most people” aren’t as into knives.

For many as long as
- a knife cuts what they want it is good.
- a tool does what is required it is good
- a flashlight is bright enough to see what they want it is good
- If it fails at any of those or breaks, then it is no good.

Many are much more utilitarian when it comes to the tools they use, than most on this forum and the rest of us are just crazy.

As long as you don’t mind being considered a little crazy go ahead and share.  Adding in talk about flashlights will really have them think your crazy.

My older friends--USA and Europe, with a few Chinese beaters for stuff they don't want to do with their good stuff.  Their maintenance skill, in many cases, makes mine look bad. That includes largely Case, German Boker, Kabar, and Klein. Their hunting knives are among the same brands. Seems Morakniv is something they all buy as well. Hand tools, USA mostly.

My younger friends--cheap POS in poor condition. One I do know carries a Leatherman Wingman.

I personally pattern what I use more as would my older friends; but I probably do put more effort in my ancillary EDC items, such as lights. Incandescent/Xenon just don't cut it anymore.

Xmas is in the air I guess so I got a few orders for knives, strangely from women namely a colleague and an ex-girlfriend

Trying to guide them through the options it always gets me that 5 years ago I did not really know what steel is about.  I rejected (Becker ) knives in a shop because it "had paint smeared all over the blade"

On the flip-side I started talking knives with an acquaintance I never knew was a knife-dude, next thing I know people are looking at us funny for discussing the in's and out's of the Scandi grind in public

People where I used to work used to think I was crazy because I collected multi tools. But I was thought of as an “anorak”. Now I risk being seen as “scary knife guy”. There is only one more knife I want  then I am going to stop.
My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

I always appreciate a lively conversation.  Passion from both sides and such.  I think its fair to say I've landed there as well and while there is some good information sometimes its an all out playground argument.

Well, this weekend I was doing heat treat research and found out 8670M steel is a good guess for older saw blades.......never even heard of the steel before then!

Lot's of good info, but too much playground to actually sign up  :salute:

I now try very hard to stay below the radar.
Last time I loaned a knife to a co-worker (CQC-5K) to cut cable sheathing on some 18-12, he asked if it was sharp as he ran his thumb across the blade.
Yes, as I handed a box of paper towels from my truck.  I finished the job that day solo, as he found a quick clinic and received 6 stitches.

Then to make it more embarrassing for him, was he cane to my hotel room next morning so I could lace up and tie his boots.  I told him later he should get duct tape and wrap around his ankles as I moving to another town and job site that afternoon.
