MUT with Surge upgrades
on: October 12, 2019, 03:45:58 PM
Hi all, first post here. I got bit by the modding bug after seeing all these wonderful mods and i wanted to give i a try. Here is what i have done to the MUT

1. surge scissors - swapped out the saw blade for the surge scissors.need to work on the locking mech as it is a tad shorter than the surge locking spring. The spring lever needs added width so that it can lock into place when the scissors fully opens up.

2. Surge T shank adapter - swapped out the Punch tool for this. Had to dremel a section of the frame out to fit the parts but well worth the effort. saw blade is fully enclosed with in the space and the location of the pocket clip acts as a shield for the fingers when in pliers mode. gotta work on the retention as well and i have a plan for it already, just need to get it to a welding table.

3. elongated side bits holder - hey... they gave a short and a long bit... why bother keeping the short one... lol...

4. t shank file storage - removed the plastic pieces at the bronze carbon scrapper area and surprisingly the space is just nice for the file that came with the surge. The scrapper acts as a retention device being quite tight to begin with. the file is held by friction and it doesnt move unless u flip out the scrapper. very nice.

So i basically turned the MUT into a edc tool for construction/ contractor work. I like the MUT for its looks and its hammer function is applicable to my profession. But being in singapore, having a tool specifically for gun related maintenance is kinda redundant since we dont allow guns here lol. So THIS makes the MUT so much more applicable to my environment lol. loving every sec of it. Will update when i have fully resolved the retention issues and the new parts work like they should.

here is the album https://imgur.com/a/uaLzde2

and heres a pic to show the surge DNA lol

added a victorinox tweezers! because i had previously filed down the bit storage plastic piece to  house the longer bit, it was too thin in my opinion to safely carve out the tunnel for the tweezers. I cut up the existing side plastic piece for the pin pusher and made it fit like a stopper for the longer bit. This doubles up as extra thickness for the tunnel carving lol.

and added grip tape to the t shank. huge improvement in thumb flip lol.

decided to swap out the surge scissors for a victorinox one. but i put it at the bronze scrapper location as i have some plans for the current scissors location. Got a stainless steel spacer cut to shape and then had it lazer welded... damn pretty welds by the welder.. extremely happy with how this turned out.

If u drilled out the pivot hole on the Vic scissors, it will also fit there.

:salute: I think this is the first time someone did a proper pivot for a Vic scissors to be fitted on a LM.  :tu:

I dont think it can be done for the MUT scrapper side pin. That hole required is 7mm..something thats different on the MUT. I think the pin only slides in from the scrapper side cuz the other end is the smaller 5.5mm pin.

if I were to bore out the vic scissors I'll be dangerously close to the edge..

Oh.. Could be my bad. Could be on the other end on the punch side... Really nice work on the welding boss.

Clean job on the welding.  The Vic scissors are great as are the Surge scissors.  Did I miss why you didn't try them?

This is really nice mod on the MUT  :hatsoff:

Oh I only had a surge previously and was trying to make the most of it. When I realised I had plans for where I initially put the scissors, I had to change out the location and the surge scissors spring mech can be quite a hassle to make it work on a pin that doesn't have the locking spring. Lol.. so i went and bought a victorinox outrider to transplant its scissors lol

yes its me again.. lol.. i tell ya, ive been bit hard by the mod bug... heres another one fresh from the welding table... i got inspired by diresta's whichblade 2 and i made a ratchet attachement to be fitted to the MUT hammer. still need to clean it up and pretty it up properly but this works. and also.. i need to think of a way to lock the attachment in.. currently its only friction ffitted.

and heres a vid of it being deployed lol
