Ok so I picked up a piece of very green Box Elder o to do some crafts.
Mainly this is my wife's project; she wants to turn the main beam into a walking stick/cane.
The bottom three inch with that huge knot secondary branch will get cut off along with each of those shorts tubs at the top leaving that bulbus main junction. Now the idea has been raised to make a tobaccoo pipe with the secondary branch forming the stem and the knot the bowl.
Honestly I have no clue what I'm doing.
I've never worked with elder before and I've never made a pipe.
So now the questions come should I debark the pieces before or after drying?
How long should I dry it for?
Should I go ahead and hollow the pith on the pipe before or after drying?
As I said this is outside of my normal skill/crafting area, and I know it's probably going to take months for the wood to dry to a usable state.
ANY tips or suggestions wood really be helpful....wood, would; get it?
