I was wondering powernoodle, has Larry the Slug inspected all those Swisstools.  I'm sure he has some pretty high standards.

My newest addition, a Spirit XC. Noticed a few differences to the Spirit X I bought from Vic last year (besides the blade of course):

The XC has the shield next to the “Victorinox”, while the X has it above. Is there any way to tell which year that change was made?

The XC also has the logo on the pliers, the newer X does not. Gotta say I like it better with the shield! :SAKnight:

Looking GOOD SVL.
Seems the pliar head with the shield might be a little more robust.  I'll have to do a closer comparison on my collection pieces.

I haven’t noticed that, might have to take some measurements.

I know your question is already eight months old :)
But according to Victorinox the "new" logo (shield above the brand name) was introduced in 2010. The shield was also removed from the plier head if I understand correctly.

I don't know if any changes have been made between 2010 and now :dunno:

Hi there!
Was just able to complete recently my small collection of the stainless steel "shield-ed" swisstool plier heads.
The 1997 one was the most difficult to find.
The fourth from the left (2002) is not easy to spot from the pictures on auctions etc... as it is very similar to the last one (2005).
The third variation (1999) is not very common, in my experience.
The second from the left (1998) is usually the most common to find, plenty of examples in mint condition available for sale
I am using the dates from the wiki page here

:iagree: Do I see that correct that the newer versions have bulkier plier heads? Or does it just look like that in the photo?

Got the older one on the right for a really good price second hand as was very grubby, the file rusty and all in need of some TLC.

Gave it a good clean and oil on the weekend, has come up like new again :like:

Also gave the case a good scrub followed by some deep leather treatment, not like new but perfectly serviceable.
I like the ratchet case (even though I don’t have the ratchet) as there’s a place for the corkscrew and enough room for an EDC knife, the RAT II fits perfectly.

The butter blade is the perfect compliment to an EDC straight blade so makes for an awlsome kit
