Replacing the can opener.
on: November 10, 2019, 08:50:26 AM
Hi folks,

Thinking of a new mod for a Spartan. I don't use the can opener ever but the bottle opener is a very nice little pry bar. So what do we replace the can opener with? My first thought would be a pruner blade, I'm a fan of it. It seems to work on 93mm models where the combo is quite popular. Will it work similarly on 91mm? Any other suggestions for a replacement?

Thanks!

Or you could mod the can opener...

I've done the same thing to the Cadet I carry every day.   It's quite handy to have a small screwdriver for those little screws that hold your glasses together, for example.

Can't say it interests me to be honest.

I have an electrician blade in place of the can opener on my Das VolksMesser. Pretty sweet.

Maybe the strange rescue blade/Philips driver from a Böker Tech Tool will fit. With a reprofiled back end it might even open fully.
I replaced said tool with a Vic Can opener, so I imagine it might work the other way round, too.
And no, I don´t know if I still have the tool. But I might look.

Does anyone know if the pruner blade will work in there without modification?

I would think that you might have to reprofile the tang area and maybe it will only work with older, thicker mainblades as the small blade is quite thin. But it should be doable.
BTW: This is the Tech Tool, in case you are not familiar with it:

The pruner would be opposite the bottle opener not on the blade layer.

Right you are - my bad. I suggested the bottle opener spot for the strange blade thingy myself and then somehow had a brain-issue.
I hope your mod works out. I have no SAK with a pruner blade handy to help imagine how it could work or not, but I´m sure someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in .

It should fit, though it could sit a little high and need the kick adjusting to bring the blade down.  You'll need a spacer to make up the thickness to match the tang of the can opener, and you'll need to bend (krink) the blade slightly to clear the cap lifter.

Will krinking not break the blade?

Only if you bend it too far. ;)

It doesn't need much of a tweak.  I grip the entire blade in soft jaws in a vice and gently bend the tang with pliers.  You're only aiming for a degree or two change in angle over the whole length.

I mused on this and thought, wait a sec, the pruner blade is already crinked. Then I had a look and it's crinked in exactly the wrong direction. I'm enclosing a picture which shows that as you said, it needs to be crinked, not only from straight but from the opposite direction.

Maybe mate the pruner with the big blade in one layer and put the small blade in teh spot of the can opener, if you wish to keep it? Might be possible.

That's an interesting idea.
