Advice on my Wave issue

So I was rooting around in the tackle box that is use to store my collection.

In the bottom of the box is the space my Wife calls the place failed tool projects go to die.

Came across this gem. It’s an OG Wave with Rebar pliers and a pair of S30v PE blades. Can’t remember if I did the mods or someone here did.

Anyways it worked fine for quiet a while then I can only assume it came loose somewhere?

It opens fine and all the handle tools open and operate fine but the issue is the pliers. When I go to plier stuff they just come loose and the plier head doesn’t open.

Is there a burr on the wire cutters catching and preventing the pliers from opening or are the handles just loose  ?

On the plus side of this, if the cutters are an issue you can take those off and replace or at least take them off and file them much more easily that if they are part of the plier head :cheers: Hope you can get it sorted, Harley :tu: Looks like a nice 2nd gen Wave :like:

99% sure it is something to do with the handles. No sign of a burr and I can just pull the pliers apart with my fingers.

Edit: So I happened to be carrying my Cybertool so took the cutters off and the Iers work much better. I can see small burrs on the cutters now but feel like a little more tight might also be in order.

On a serious note-

After a buddy of mine showed me his Leatherman, I have been dying to get one. I have Swisstools, but never owned a Leatherman. His is the Wave...I really like it.

No rights or wrongs anyway.

When looking at the plier based tools only, getting a LM or Vic means you're getting a quality tool built to last.

Which brand someone gets all depends on the individual and also the local market availability.

I prefer my Spirit for work, but love my TTI in my offtime.
Or the good ol' PST... or my Black Oxide Spirit... Or a SAK...  :D

Not sure of it applies because you have a Rebar head on there...or that it's a first gen wave, but on the newer ones (of which I've had this identical issue) the spring bar that rides on the pliers at the bottom, it loses tension and you can just use a punch and a hammer and lightly tap to bend the spring bar back down, towards the rounded cam section of the pliers head.  This restores the tight handle engagement when opened for pliers use.

I think that's all you need to do.  I did my stainless 2nd Gen wave myself instead of sending it in.  I did send it in eventually when I rounded off a bunch of the pliers teeth. They put a brand new wave+ plier on it.  Nice.
