Temperatures have been hotter down under, I thought that would make fighting the fires harder. I was shocked to find this graphic when reading up on the state of things:

Best wishes for all Australia!  :tu:
I'm wondering about that blank spot in the lower-right middle.... Is there nothing but rocks and sand there?
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I came that close to having a job here, several years ago:

I believe the greenery is sparse....

It really is awful and I hope everyone stats safe.  I still vividly remember the wildfire 15yrs ago I had to evacuate for when I lived in California and feel for anyone who has to experience similar.

Last night, we had two bushfires flare up about 15km NW of us, less than 10 miles. Very hot and windy, temps over 41 degrees C, 106F. We had charred bark and leaves falling around our house, thankfully they weren't embers. I had hoses all round the house charged and ready to go in case a spot fire flared close. Thankfully the wind died away and we got some rain over night, and a cooler day today.

That's good news, given the situation, Tazzie.

I'm sure there's no need to tell you to stay vigilant, but stay safe!   :tu:

During fire season, we keep a bag packed and ready to go, in case things get a bit out of control.  :pok:

Fire at Pelham:

Quote
The watch and act alerts have been issued for areas in Fingal in the state's north-east and Pelham in the south.

A fire at Pelham put lives and about 30 homes under threat after it broke out about 5:00pm yesterday, which effectively put nearby Elderslie and Broadmarsh at high risk.

I hope you have a reliable warning system available that also provides information of nearby fire locations and wind directions etc.

And that's a good advice from Sir Nix  :salute:

Fire at Pelham:

(Image removed from quote.)

Yep, the Pelham and Elderslie fires were the ones. Our house is fairly well cleared block with grass and some trees and bushes. The grass is mown short and should be reasonably defendable. Ember attack would be the most likely scenario than direct fire front but we could always be better prepared

All sympathies to Australia and her peoples and animals.

Quite selfishly, I am feeling nervous myself. We have had remarkably little snow so far this winter season. I fear this portends a harsh fire-season for us here, too. We depend on a good snowpack for our water supplies, both domestic and agricultural. This dry-spell, now causing problems down-under, may also have ramifications here.

This global heating thing isn't so amusing when it burns your house down.  :(
