More stuff done.  Got the roof on and started to frame the inside for insulation.

First few panels went in, cut to size with a stanley knife

(Bought a proper insulation saw after that; so much easier)

Electrician came to do the first fix

6 x LED strips, new mini consumer unit and wiring for a dozen sockets and external lighting

Installed the roof trim and made sure that the roof was properly watertight

Then got to work on the rest of the ceiling

Ripped out a rotten old workbench at the far end. Was mostly held together by woodworm smurf.

Then started battening the walls

Foil blanket insulation on top of that, with a vapour barrier on the ceiling

Sealed one of the doors shut as it'll never be used (but left the mechanism in place just in case)

Going to paint it to match the new door (coming soon) and build an insulated stud wall in front of this.

Next on the list is to paint the external walls and order yet more timber...

That's the plan.  No windows (but plenty of light), space to work on whatever takes my fancy and dry, secure storage for my toys.  It might even turn into a bit of an office/lab, if it's comfy enough down there.

Where did I get to?

My wife painted the outside

Finished the stud wall

Boarded the inside of the lower half

Cleared the upper half to make a start on that

Battens in

Insulation on

More battens on top

Got a couple of small patches of wall I can't get to until the new doors are fitted as the mechanism for the existing doors gets in the way, and the new ones won't arrive for a couple of weeks.  Have ordered the timber to get on with lining the back half while I wait, and the recycled PVC floor tiles so I can get those down once I've painted the walls.

Starting to think about the layout

Bike and gear storage in the right-hand (lower) half.  Hoping to pick up some surplus cabinets and/or racking from work in the next couple of months.

L-shaped workbench at the back of the left-hand (upper) half with vice and pillar drill on it.  Toolbox somewhere in there, with some floorspace left clear for working on my bikes.  Probably wall units and a toolboard at the back.  I'd like to get a lathe and some bike framebuilding kit in there, so I need some flexibility in the layout, depending on what I end up with.

Is now a good time to tell you insulation is better to the outside of thermal mass?  ;)

Maybe. But... cost, space constraints and planning restrictions mean that internal insulation was the way to go.

Besides, I want to fill it with things made of cast iron. Will that do for a thermal mass?

:iagree:  Unfortunately cost, planning regs (conservation area) and the fact that I'd need a 3m flu sticking out the top of the garage mean it's not going to happen.  I'll make do with a fan heater and a hat.

Bugger, a friend of mine has one ins his workshop (a bit bigger than yours) and even bellow 0 it can get warm enough to work in short sleeves.

Floor is almost done.  Decided I like the wood finish and didn't fancy three days of painting...

Thanks everyone.  Sorry about the tiles Sparky.  ;)

Fitted the new doors.  Quite a lot of smurfing around...

Have got some paint in a matching colour for the right-hand side.

Which meant I could finish the insulation and wall panelling inside

Now it's secure the bikes went in and I built some chonky shelves

and a workbench to stick my vice to.
