Day 5: SOG PowerPlay

I bought this tool because I liked the PowerAccess so much, and the PowerPlay was only $30 on eBay, brand new with a bit kit and two sheaths. That was just not something I could pass up. And... it's proven to be a robust, worthwhile tool to have.   Yes, the locks get a lot of flak, but I found that leaving all the tools open partway overnight really loosened up the springs and made the locks far more livable.  I've been using this tool lately in my garage during my remodel, in place of the Gerber MP600 that I would normally be using. And so far, it's managed every task I've thrown at it. The pliers are pretty robust, I've been using them to leverage out the large hammered-in staples used to hold romex to 2x4s. I've also been using this thing while rewiring my garage, cutting romex, stripping the outer sheath off of romex, using the screwdriver to screw down strain relief, pulling the cutouts out of handi-boxes, etc.

The OHO blades are really useful as well. I use the plain edged blade constantly, and it's really nice. It's easily deployed, locks up well, is nice and long, and quite thick and robust. Both blades are VERY sharp, and I've been using the serrated blade to slice around insulation to strip the wires in lieu of a real wire stripper.

Essentially, the more I use this SOG, the more I like it. It's robust, easily repaired and adjusted, and really comfortable to use. The plastic sheath is really slick, and I'm just happy with this tool. It works, it hasn't broken, and I've abused it pretty well so far.

Charles.

My wife got this for me as a birthday gift.  Still have the owners manual.
Wait, what's that stapled to the back?
An old fashioned cash register receipt from 1985!
Keeping a PST from 80s is awesome, but keeping that receipt and manual is impressive! :o

Day 9
Today is my only Spyderco - a PM2 Left-Handed version.  Even though left vs right isn’t that big of deal on this knife as it is with others, I try to support companies who make the offering due to so few doing it.
(Image removed from quote.)
Another iconic knife from Spyderco.  You'd raised a really good point--compression lock is pretty ambidextrous, and maybe buying the left handed version make it even easier for both hand to operate?

Day9
Still sorting my office/shop...found some very rough, unfinished blades from the forge in a box and a horseshoe fork& knife set(not mine)
These probably have been sitting there for most of a decade; I should finish them someday.

Helps if I remember the pic
That'd be a cool set to use for BBQ!

The direction you press the compression lock to is the only thing that really varies.  It is really a matter of getting used to either way just like with Frame and liner locks.

The other left-handed knife that I have is a true left-hand specific, like the ones Chris Reeves make.  The frame lock is on the same side as the clip for left hand tip up pocket carry and the clip os not reversible.  Despite preferring flippers, a Chris Reeves’ Left-Handed Sebenza is probably one of my next if not my next knife.  I wanted one of the Uni-Haiti Chris Reeves and Shirogorov collaboration, but couldn’t just $2k for a knife, especially considering I like to carry and use my knives.

Sounds like an interesting knife, do you have a picture for that?

I have a few CRK, but all are right handed.  I think operating it with left hand totally doable depending on model, but I guess it would be much harder than compression lock.  CRK is one of those few companies that will give you a thumbstud for one side only(for most models at least), which can be another issue to deal with.

Btw, just a very friendly reminder, beware of the new 31, some users are reporting lock rock, and for whatever reason, CRK is claiming it part of the design/feature.

Day 9. A pretty boring, but simple knife.  Unlike most of my SAKs, it has no interesting advertising or of any vintage. Had work that required a few tools, but a knife easily carried in shorts. Tinker came in just fine for that.

Victorinox Tinker. A recent secondhand pickup. My plans were to replace the plastic scales with SwissBianco orange G-10, but haven't quite yet; and find it quite adequate. Will probably end up springing for Stayglow. Easier to attach, and MUCH cheaper.  And a vehicle just as capable--the Unimog.

(Image removed from quote.)

Easy carry... a Vic. classic  :like:

Nice knife.  I do not own any WE, but I do have two Ferrum Forge knives produced by WE.  The ones I have are nicely made.  They are also the smoothest flippers I have aside from my Shirogorov Neon and Haiti.

Stay out of  each other's sheds, everyone is showing off their stash here, no need to make it weird(, she said. G'day Reinier and friends )

Dat 10
A little folder I got from a comrade on deployment.  No idea of maker or materials , it's approx 6mm thick at the spine and has plenty of back spring tension with a nice  spear point blade

I do like some of the Ferrum Forge design, especially their choil which is large and very functional.  Drop shut action used to be one of the benchmark for high-end/custom knives, but I felt the industry has progressed to the point where we are seeing it more and more in mid-tech(if it still exist) or even production knives.  We surely live in the Golden age of this hobby.

I think SMKW being one of the larger retailers really know how to do runs and items for the enthusiasts, I got suck in pretty bad with all the National Park Bear SAKs and can't be happier with them.

Day 10

Postie has dropped a package through the letterbox- some M2 torx machine screws for a distant future project.... a Victorinox classic does the opening honours, this one is part of the first of 2 series of wildlife tracks (orme in Italian) produced by Victorinox for Italy - the one that appealed to me was the Ghiro (an edible dormouse, now called glis glis, formerly glis edibilis) though the picture on the box looks more like an extra-terrestrial!

Inspired by comis’ WE, I thought I’d post my two knives that were produced by WE - Ferrum Forge Crux and Gent.  I especially like the wood scale Gent which is a great knife in a nice small sleek package.

Day 10: Another not very often (never?) seen around MTo. True Utility SmartKnife. The screw driver tip is not very user friendly, but it can be used to help open the blade, like a flipper. Frame lock, no blade play. Never really used it (what a surprise!), but I think the bottle opener and carabiner would be the most used tools.

Notice how everything is labelled, to let everyone know what tool does what...
