Day 03:

Today was a Buck 110 day. This one was issued with "Paperstone" scales. These are essentially a paper micarta. In this configuration the 110 in light and easy to carry. Out in the yard, the 110 pruned some branches and cut some irrigation line as I continue to modify the system to accommodate Winter's effects and some new plants.

(Image removed from quote.)

While the 110 took care of small stuff, I had to pull out my Silky saw to prune off the remnants of a previously pruned limb on a young Maple tree. Hey, at least it's growing!

(Image removed from quote.)

I love this saw! Cuts on the pull cut and cuts with determination. An excellent blade to have on hand.  :tu:

There were a few questions about the 102...yes, I got it right this time...the 102:

(Image removed from quote.)
Top to bottom: 119, 110, 102

The 119 clearly dwarfs the others. I really like the beefy 119; however, for day to day utility, the 110 and 102 steal the show in my book. There was a question about the handle material of this 102. I beleive it is Buck's standard phenolic resin stuff, just in 'red' as opposed to black. I'd call it 'maroon' or 'ox blood' but Copper and Clad went with 'red'. I like it!

Oh i love that 102, looks a really nice size  :tu:

DAY 4
AITOR - Cuchillo de Monte  (knife of the hills or knife of the mountains).  I've used this one quite a bit when going metal detecting to poke through the dirt looking for stuff.  It's seen a good share of abuse and has held up great.

I carry this one quite often. The blade is not long but sharp and solid and keeps the edge reasonably well.
A Leatherman Mini  :hatsoff:
I’m with comis in not understanding why the mini hasn’t been brought back.  I understand not liking if use the pliers all the time, but for occasional use it is a great complementary carry to a SAK.

Couple Schrade Cut Co.. The knife with the bail is model number 2135 and originally came with an 18" chain. It is considered a boys knife.

Day 4

After seeing some of the bigger knives so far this challenged, I decided it was time to post my only two big fixed blade knives.

These two knives are sentimental pieces for me because they are heirlooms.  These were my Grandfather’s knives from when he was younger.  I was shocked and excited when my father gave these to me.  Even though he died when I was 13, my Grandfather played a huge part in my growing up to be the person I am, including being the reason I joined the Navy.  If I remember correctly, my Grandfather passed the Puma down to my father on his first hunting trip after joining the Army.

I had the chance to buy one for $65, I think it was, several years ago. Didn't then, big mistake now. They are rarer than hen's teeth.

:like: Nice! I have to admit, the Puma White Hunter has to be one of the best-looking knives ever made. Every bit funciton as it is form. Vs. today, many companies are putting out knives that are all form and no function; or ugly but it works.

With the 'ox blood' handle 102, does the balance point of the knife center near or close to the index finger?

The balance point is about at the spot between the index and middle finger--the 102 is a little handle heavy. It seems a bit funny to write that because the knife itself is very light! So, while the balance point is a bit bit back in the handle, I think this gives the knife a nice sense of fine control and security. For me, the 102 seems a bit like a scalpel or an X-Acto knife.

In general, I prefer a knife with a neutral or handle-heavy balance point. However, before this challenge is over, I'll post some pics of knives that belie my claim....  ;)

Day 04:

Today's carry was busy today!  This Herbertz lock back did everything from clipping twine and some light pruning in the garden to opening parcels and even a package of peppermint candies.

This mid-sized Herbertz nicely fills the gap between the Buck 112 and 110. I was most fortunate to receive this beauty from our own McStitchy.

(He is old now and carrying a heavy beast like this has become a bit much for him. He wanted to see it used and so passed it on to me. (I think I got most of the story details right, there....))

Day 4. Needed a few tools, but didn't want to carry knife and MT; and decided to carry a SAK that is normally in my collection, but apparently, last time I had it out, it got put in a lunchbox alongside EDC's on top of the cabinet.  It is my third oldest SAK (I have a small one-bladed red Grilon Wenger Tahara from the '20s, and a 1942 Soldier that are both older), but my oldest 91mm.

It is a 1957-1961 Victorinox 236maU. Basically a Ranger, but made before most of the models had names. This came in a "junk lot" I paid about ten bucks for.  The only real issue--all liners are cracked at the center pin, which has reduced snap. This is a common issue. But, the rest of the tools show normal wear and tear. Even the scissors still have the original spring.  The only thing I will criticize is that the main blade was probably sharpened with a too coarse sharpening stone; and somewhat poorly. Has the typical bail chip.  And yes, tweezers are original. No toothpick however--but who uses that?

Thank you for the story.  I agree with Cody about many modern designs could focus more on aesthetics than the actual function, and looking at that Puma, I actually think it could be a better 'survival' knife than most militaristic design.

Trio of sak’s.
1st pic. The top had something different about it, which I don’t remember now. The middle one I found interesting because of the light red colour, and I bought the bottom one for the advertising stamp.

Wasn't the top one actually basically a Bantam with Wenger stamps and logo? In other words, not a Gourmet or whatever the Wenger equivalent is?
