Acid washing saw blades
on: January 05, 2020, 11:20:44 AM
Hey all, excited to start playing with some larger SAKs but I was wondering what you do about stone washing 84/91/93mm saw blades. I feel like they will be duller after stone washing and I don't exactly know how I would go about sharpening them so I was just a little confused as to what to do. Do they stay sharp enough? Should I fill the teeth with blu tack?

I think a bit of nail polish on the teeth would do it.

Would the process not still take the varnish off the saw tips? Maybe a bead of silicone like you put toothpaste on a brush?  :dunno: should grip on nicely once dry, and pull away afterwards. But no experience with the process so afraid I cannot offer any advice.

No, nail polish is what you usually use to mask things like pivot holes etc when you acid wash. You use acetone to remove the polish afterwards... I think, it's been ages since I farted about with acid. It's nasty stinky stuff.

Ive been using so much hydrochloric for acid washing tools and ammonia for antiquing brass that Ive actually grown to like both smells =‘) whoops

Ive asked one other SAK modder on instagram who said he simply does nothing, they blunt a little but still work well enough, which makes sense, but I guess anything I do will help. Will get back to you all in a month or two when I get around to experimenting  :tu: :D

It may be interesting to do a pic tutorial as I’m sure like me, they’re a lot of us who have never tried acid (washing)  :pok:

I would love to do one on how I do it, but my way is very... “diy friendly” just in case you were expecting something more professional  :P :P

Like I said, Im out of action for a month or two but hopefully I will remember when I get back to it
