Roll-Up Happy Hour Kits for Travel
on: January 07, 2020, 08:51:36 PM
Over the long holiday break I had a chance to put together a couple projects to give as gifts that I think my fellow SAK Knights will appreciate.  Each carries a piece of oiled cherry wood as a cheese board, an 8 oz stainless steel flask, and a Victorinox Cheese SAK.  They all go together into a shell cordovan roll-up, easily stored in the trunk of your car, for those impromptu happy hours while traveling.

One goal I had was to use shells that had clear and obvious flaws, and were thus unsuitable for other kinds of projects like wallets, handbags, watch straps, etc.  The Color No 8 shell was huge, so I was able to build the whole kit from one shell.  The Natural color kit was made by attaching four shells together, but I did it in an irregular way, following whatever their natural margins were.

Here are the two together, in their rolled-up state:

Because the cherry wood cheese boards are randomly sized, the two kits are different sizes.  Here is the Color No. 8 kit:

And here is the Natural kit:

Unrolled and ready for use they look like this:

The Natural Kit has room for expansion.  I will be adding a Naked Compact, built by MTo's very own Max Stone, to this one, just above the cocktail forks:

Here are some other views showing the differences and some of the details of the two:

Thanks guys!  They were fun to make, and my two recipients (wife and sister-in-law) were both thrilled.

I can't wait for a road trip to use them.

Thank you, Storm.  They were really fun to make, but even better was how happy the two recipients were when they opened them.  I've since added one of Max Stone's Naked Compacts to the one that lives at my house:

That is very neat  and Max’s addition just complements it even more!  :tu:
