Modding a 108 GAK, Two Questions.
on: January 19, 2020, 09:15:50 PM
Fellow modders,

I have the idea to make a pair of stag scales out of antler and put them on a special 108 mm GAK I have.  I have two questions and hope that community members with more experience might be able to help.

Question 1.  What size brass pins?  I want to be sure I have the right size in stock before I take the GAK apart.

Question 2.  My plan is drill the new scales all the way through and peen the pins on the outside, like a Pioneer or Cadet.  Given this, would you leave the aluminum liners in place and put the new scales on top of them, or remove them and let the stag scales serve as scale and liner in one (like on a Pioneer or Cadet)?

Many thanks,

Myron

Question 2 Either keep the liners or remake them from brass  :tu:

Myron, no experience modding 108, but here is a link may prove useful:

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,38835.msg631618.html#msg631618

I probably would search more on Mod squad to double confirm those info are accurate about pin size. :D

For the Stag scale, I probably would keep the liner as a backing to the stag scales.  At least that's how most of my traditional knives are done, probably due to stag scales may 'move'(shrink or crack) over time.

Thanks guys!  This is my first time making scales of any sort and so far it's been fun.  I'm waiting for my donor 108 to arrive from Switzerland, and then I expect the rest of the project to be pretty straight forward.

@SteveC, I'd love to hear more about the use of KMn04 to clean up antler.  I've seen a few articles on line about it, but nothing that makes me think it's required.  Would love to hear of any MTo members' experiences.

Thanks,

Myron

I don't have any experience with antler but have used it on bone handles. It will bring out the darker highlights of the antler and darken the whites . There are videos on the youtube.

The pins are the same size as 91mm, 2.5 and 2.25mm.  Good luck man.

Thanks Simyo and pfrsantos.  Just waiting for the donor GAK to arrive and I think the will come together pretty quickly.  I know there will be a spot or two where the antler scale fails to cover the liner completely.  I think I'll wait and see what it looks like but may have to use a little colored epoxy for these spots.

The white tailed deer antlers were not very big and they were very curvy, which meant it was a reach to get a usable section.  Thanks again for the suggestions and support!

All done.  This material is simultaneously fun and frustrating to work with.  Fun because it's so easy to drill, shape, etc.  Frustrating because it presents no regular surfaces.  If I had it to do again I'd use a different species, making it possible to get a bigger piece to start with.  But still, for a picnic knife I'm happy.  :)
