Spyderench / Byrdrench owners club
« on: February 16, 2020, 07:24:59 PM »
An owners club for anyone who's lucky enough to have acquired one of the variants of these marvelous pieces of engineering!

I'll kick this off with the 2 USA made plain edge versions that I found locally last year.

Both seem to be from the first runs since they're lacking the type marking on the handle.

Members might be somewhat scarce, but I'm curious to know who has one :D

I have a couple of Spyderenches, both with an "AUS-8, Taiwan" combo blade, and one Byrdrench with a "8Cr13Mov" plain blade.

As Mechanickal says, not common these days (and usually quite expensive).

It seems like the Byrdrench is more rare than the Spyderench?  Not that either is even remotely common.

Aaaahw :(

And Barry, I believe the Spyderench is the least common out of the variants...
Don't take my word on it though.

According to Sal Glesser, they lost money on every one they sold.  There's been enough interest in them that he acknowledged thinking about a small run of them, but not anytime soon.

Production turned out to be too costly and too ireliable to have a steady output of tools from the factory.

They tried twice in the US, once in Taiwan and once in China before discontinuing it alltogether.

Hello! (* `◟ 、)

“byrd” is cheaper brand sold by Spyderco, made in china.
So quality of byrdrench seems to be lower than Spyderench.
But at present, both models are as rare. ԅ( ˘ω˘ԅ)

Congrats members of this very special club.  I had the chance once to buy one but at the time it seemed out of my budget .  I'm not actively wanting one anymore thankfully but lets not be silly and think if one happened upon me I wouldn't snap it up

…It's just joke. Sorry for my jumping to a conclusion.

But fire alarm is one of most important system there. They can't do work without your achievement.  You are great!! d(>_・ )

Pretty certain I have all three variants of the Spyderench  PE, SE & CE...there is a picture of them somewhere in the dusty depths of MTo archives
Also have the Byrdrench too
Plus the tiny Spyderench pin badge

Couldn’t find them even 5yrs ago, then they all turned up within 6mths.
I just checked the current eBay prices....
 :o whoa

That’s exactly why I wanted them. My whole collection was bought as a investment. Pretty much bankrupted me back then. I knew the prices would go high but I didn’t think they would go so high so quick. When I think back as to how the US dominated the multi tool market back in the 80’s & 90’s. It’s all gone now (more or less) the prices will go higher I suspect when the next generation of collectors emerge with big/deeper pockets than the current generation.
The attraction of collecting MT’s and SAKs was that they were cheapish (back then) small (easy to store) and the materials used ensure they will last. As opposed to collecting cars, bikes, optics etc etc
MT’s will last a long time even if just locked away and forgotten...ahem

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Some of the prices being asked seem a bit too high to me, but if they do end up selling for those high prices then the current owners should be very happy.

Mines were both about the price of a basic SAK or large SAK, so I knew I lucked out there.
The first one I found was listed for over 2 weeks before I bit the bullet :ahhh
