My wife broke my Charge TTi!
on:
October 05, 2019, 12:53:10 PM
Yes, she did it, trying to remove a screw from a marble floor (a door stop remnant). Thankfully she broke it at the tip. She offered to buy another one, but I wasn't fond of the thin tip anyway, so I consider shortening the other tip to come flush with the broken.
My question is: is a dremel powerful enough to do the job (and with which accessory) or bother not and go to a professional with a stone wheel?

How about sending it in for warranty? You may get a new one.
If warranty shipping and wait time is to much for you, and as it looks repairable to me, I'd take it to a metal shop and have it grinded even.

It's doable with a Dremel type tool, but I'll be a pain and the end result might be a bit messy. You'd be better off and will get more professional results with a grinder or belt sander, but remember to quench frequently. It's not too bad a break really.

Put in to a liquid to cool of and lock in the desired structure of the steel. But what you want to do is to use water to cool it off before any unwanted changes happen due to heat buildup. I go by the rule if it is too hot to hold it goes in to the water. That means dunking it multiple times in a minute.
And dremel should have not trouble taking off that remaining tip. I use the thing that look like a roll made out of sand paper that you put on to a rubber insert for the dremel. Don't know what it is called...

I have used a cut off disc ( very flat disc ) then the sanding drum ( described above ) to smooth things out afterwards. MULTIPLE dunks in water ( room temp water ) to keep the metal from over heating. Like said above if the metal gets to hot to touch it goes in the water. Its actually a fast mod to do. You can use a file to do any touch ups afterward.
Use safety glasses and gloves and hold plier in a vise. Be safe and go for it and good luck.
Here's my mod I did.

Twice unlucky. I used my Dremel clone to cut it. It was cut easily. But immediately afterwards the damned thing stopped working and I wasn't able to finish it. I might have to buy a genuine Dremel now and finish the job.
You can see that the tool isn't pretty at the OCD level (the tips come flush, but one is broken at an angle, the other cut) but it is fully usable, which gives me time to buy the tool.
Now the question is: Which Dremel, 3000, Stylus, another one?

You can file at this point to smooth things out if a usable tool is wanted. If you want more OCD level tool you'll have to take more off both to level them out. Another option after the work is done and IF you are not happy is LOKI. You can buy a plier head from him for far less than a new TTi.
As far as which Dremil, I have an older one so I'm not up to date on them. I'll have a look at what I have.

Excellent job, kkokkolis! Maybe you can radius the cuts using a file, and finish off with sandpaper?
About the Dremel, from the list of choices, I'd get the 3000. But, if I were going to use it only for basic cuts, deburring, sanding, and general polishing I'd get a 2-speed 200 series; 15k and 30k speeds are enough. The advantage of the 3000 is that you can lower on revolutions, and be able to cut/polish plastics without melting.
Good luck on your endeavour, and enjoy your "new tool"!

Well you are almost there
To bad the Dremel clone quit on you though
I would go with a variable speed one for sure
if the 3000 is that, then that is what I would get
A regular file would finish this job though and a diamond file would make it asthetically pleasing looking
