Kickstarter for Opinel Pocket clips, the "Clipinel"
on: February 23, 2020, 06:46:24 PM
Hi all,

There is a kickstarter up for a Pocket clip mod for Opinel knives.

Seems to be an interesting enough design that I backed it for the N09 version to toss on my N09 EDC model.

Search for "Clipinel", end date is March 27th.

Good idea, well thought out, but 14 bucks? :ahhh

I bought my two Opies for under 10usd, so a pocketclip being 50% more expensive than the knife it's designed for doesn't make sense

To each his own I guess. I could see one on the Outdoor model that's serrated and OHO; or maybe even my DIY to make it easier to get to (and seriously, I may consider it for that one); but on the wooden ones, having a clip just seems so incongruous. Local Same goes for the Case traditional folders (i.e. Trapper)  with pocket clips. They come from the factory, but look like someone's mod the way they just screw into the bolster.  Local price on my No. 6 when I got it was $9. The clip is $5 more.

True enough. But I look at it more like this when it comes to kickstarters. Often these are individuals or very small businesses making a small amount of items with all the high overhead that comes along with it. Add in the fact that these are made in the states and I am willing to chip in a bit more money to support someone that is trying to get a new and innovative idea off the ground in a field that interests me (Knives/EDC).

Also, the knife I am planning to use this on is the DIY, which I think I paid upwards of $27 on and use weekly as my yardwork knife. A pocket clip will be very handy. To me.

It's easy to knock things based on price but I don't think $14 is a lot of money for this clip

Yes, had been seeing this clip for a while, and hope they could get funded.

I am just curious whether they expect people to pop out the original safety ring?  It's really easy if you have a 'reverse' pliers(where you sqeeze and pliers will open, instead of closing), but it may not be totally straight forward if you are doing it for the first time without that pilers.

I heard that the easiest way is to open the blade with the ring locked closed. It'll pop right off.

Yes, I too learned that from youtube, but somehow it didn't work for mine.  Fearing I would torque something out of shape or end up cutting myself even with the tape on blade(it kept trying to stay shut while you are fighting to pry it open), I end up just using my 'reverse' pliers.

Looking at the video on the kickstarter and I am 99.5% sure that the clip fits over the locking ring which you leave in the "unlocked" position. You turn the pocket clip itself to lock the knife.

Thank you for the clarification, I looked at the youtube more closely and you are right about it being over the original lock which should be a real easy thing to install.  Most Opinel have really tight collar, and it's smart to have the right tolerance to capitalize on that.
