How to date an Old Cross Pioneer?
on: March 31, 2020, 05:57:07 PM
I've got a couple of Old Cross Pioneers and I'm having trouble narrowing down the date range.  Both have brass liners, and have the same tang stamps.  My tang stamp reference guide seems to define these as either "VSSR1" (52-86) or "VSSR2" (86-08), but the text looks virtually identical to me.  Both have a keyring which are part of the brass liners.

The only difference I can really discern is that the opener tools on the lower Pioneer seem to have a striated surface, whereas the tools on the patina'd Pioneer have a more brushed surface.

I've never been able to find a date range for the Old Cross itself.  Any help on this one would be appreciated.
