Making the most of lockdown
« on: April 05, 2020, 11:14:04 AM »
As the title suggests
Currently furloughed for 12wks (hopefully will not actually be 12 wks)
3 week waiting list for diy sand/cement to arrive.

So, usual chore jobs aside, considering uploading various pictures (not yet taken any!) of my MT & SAK collection.
It's along time since I did this and last time I tried, pictures wouldn't upload due to file size...sure the max size had been reduced.
Anyway, can anyone give me some idea what file size looks best for images. I'm going to use canon dslr so I can easily reduce the resolution rather than downsizing later. I don't need big file sizes...I own the tools  :D

I note SAK GUY usually uploads tons of pictures on individual posts..curious to know how that's done and what resolution is used.

Quicker I get a response quicker I'll begin snapping pictures....Any particular ones first??  :climber:

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

https://picresize.com
That program can easily squeeze an image down to around 1920 x 1080 pixels and 400kB without impacting quality too much.
Just have to crop your image first so that the object of interest occupies as many of those pixels as possible. :)

Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

If you host the pictures externally (like Imgur or Giphy for example) you can post the direct links between [ IMG] and [/IMG ] to display them here.

That way you can add endless pictures to a single post since you're not adding the pictures directly, but rather link their view through here.

Buy now or regret later

Thanks to you both for your replies  :tu:
But, I don't really understand how all those work and I'm at a age where knowing isn't really important to me. TBH most other sites I frequent I usually take and upload straight from phone. But I'm certain my iPhone has no way or reducing the file size, without the faff of downloading a app presumably .
My initial idea was to simply reduce the camera resolution and then install the sd card directly into the laptop and transfer files from there. I don't keep anything an the laptop ..no pictures, no music...nothing. It's old and slow, but for what I do it works just fine.

update;- just tried reducing the resolution on my smallest dslr (sl1) not nice...so tried the canon G16....seems much better, so will go with that.

This is definitely worth doing though Toshy, it saves a lot of faffing about. I used cubeupload, but there's loads of others about.

Okay..oaky...wait...Toshy !!  :drink:
I was hoping it would be plain sailing...obvs not.
If I  have to go down this route, I might as well go the whole hog.
Would creating a account on flicker help? then just uploading a link??  Easy enough to type that. but have absolutely no idea what that entails....hence why I'm a luddite!!

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I think flikr is one of the bad ones now. maybe I misunderstood!

I'm beginning to remember why I never uploaded now...what a palava.
Okay.

what concerns me is that I don't really want my images to be viewed by others except here on MT'o. What I'm implying is, I don't want non MT'o users making screenshots of images I upload, hence why I would have preferred to have just uploaded directly to here.
Maybe I should open this thread in the No Life Club?

I intend to photograph group shots the likes of which I have never seen before. I.e All Wenger snows, blaze, evowoods, alinghi, etc etc
same with leatherman, gerber, sog, etc etc

Not too comfortable knowing once uploaded anyone and everyone can see them.

My reasons are, that for me the next chapter is to create a book of my collection. I haven't looked into it fully, but over the years Ibehind the scenes away from mt'o I've been buying props related to my collection for this very reason. whether it ever happens is anyones guess. but it's the reason I don't want my images out there.

Well, Imgur photos are public, but you can make them non-searchable I think? By not having a descriptive title, or tags, etc. And only link to them in the no-life club if you wish.

Any MTO member can go to your profile and see what pics you've attached in the past. For example, I see that the last 4 pics you've attached were done so last year, in the 'What's your latest Leatherman?' thread. :D

yes. they were from my phone, then emailed back to me at a lower resolution (below 1,040k)?? tried to do similar sometime afterwards and was told the images were still too big, so went off and did something else instead.

its a real shame given how good (read convenient)  phones are that MT'o doesn't have the abilty to resize images as they are submitted.

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

A simple app on your phone like Snapseed and some time spent learning how to use it will work just fine to resize images so you can post them on here.

Though once you've uploaded them on here they're out in the public domain, whether you put them in the no life club or not. There are 300 people with a passing interest in multitools who have access to that area and who knows what any of them might want to do with your collection snaps? If you want to keep them private until you publish the book then you're probably better off not posting them anywhere.

May I give you some advice. If you are planning on producing a book with your photographs...do not upload them anywhere on the internet as they will be public. I cannot tell you how many of my photographs have been used without authorization. For a time, i was finding my photos from ebay listings to actual journalist who didn't bother to ask me for permission first. Luckily for me, I really do not mind (except for folks trying to make money off of them..That gent who published a book using SAKWiki photos come to mind).

A little Leatherman information.

Hey Dan
That’s pretty much exactly what’s bothering me. Because I own full sets, yet you never see pictures of full sets hence why I wanted to photograph them.
And yet, I always screensave pictures I see on the web - I just don’t want them to screensave mine and use them elsewhere.

Shame because the Wenger sets would make incredible pictures.

Not to worry, everything is stored away safely.

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Tosh, a trick for uploading pictures on public domain, and trying not have it stolen for other unintentional purpose is to put watermark on strategic location on the picture itself.  I have seen some online seller even put a ribbon with their name on it across the item, so other seller could not steal photo for reuse.

Watermarking had crossed my mind, but that just ruins it for everyone.
I suppose NLC is a possibility.

But I still wouldn’t want to upload top drawer pics....especially as these days most of what I have has become hard to find, by which I mean full sets.
When I search the internet I can easily find pictures of each tool, but never completed sets.

As per size, I just upload pics to my PC. Then, I open them in MS Paint, Resize to 80% and get them below 500Kb.

You can show resized pics here. Being smaller, they're not likely to be used, because the quality won't be as good enlarged.

Granted, they won't look as good as they could, but it's a way to protect them.

Awlso, posting in the NLC forums is another way to reduce viewers.

With Photobucket...my photos were downsized to 800x600. That did not stop theft. Just saying.

Here’s 2 pics of my 2nd most prized wengers….my Wenger Realtree collection
The 2nd picture is what came AFTER.

I love my Snows

BTW the 2nd pic shows a genuine Wenger Ranger 61 in Hardwood Camo - came in authentic Wenger box. That particular model was (I think) never listed in Wenger catalogues, so quite rare I suspect.

I can imagine. I too very nearly didn’t buy them because at the time I was truly sick of spending money on Wengers. I was offered the now ultra rare Snow 97, but turned it down  what was I thinking!!  :bnghd:

What about getting an account at http://gallery.multitool.org/ ?
I did so because I the pictures I need hosted online are for this forum anyway. I was using Photobucket until they went silly and I didn't want to change to another host who might end up doing the same thing.
The photos get watermarked although I guess that could easily be cropped out.

Wenger overload  :ahhh

How I love those Wenger knives... I'm so happy I still found a lot of them at decent prices since the Wenger brand name ended.

Found some nice Wenger Rangers (1 Blaze and two Snows, one of which belongs to my oldest son), and about 30 of the 85mm ones.

May I ask, what's this Snow97 you keep talking about (you mentioned it more than once in the past when we were talking about Wenger Rangers).
