The Goodwill Covid Crisis Pay It Forward Giveaway!!
on: April 07, 2020, 07:14:17 AM
I know stress for some of us is running quite high right now. I also know it can become easy to "wall-up" during stressful times and in order to (hopefully)  spread some good will, I have put this small package together of items I would like to give away. Basically, the next person to put a giveaway package together and post here, will get the following items:

Case Copperlock Wharncliffe
Olight I3T flashlight (AA batteries)
Two sided diamond sharpening stone
EDC multi-pocket pouch desert tan

As I said, if you would like to participate, throw an item or a few items together to send to someone, post a picture here, and tell us about the items in the package. Then send the items to the next person to post theirs and so on. I guess I just wanna keep good will going in our little community.

Is this really necessary ?
We are all being told not to make unnecessary trips, not to mention the entire postal workers subjected to yet more possibilities of contracting covid-19

Not trying to be a killjoy spudley - but real people are dying right now. This really isn’t the time for “pat-on-the-back” pay it forward nonsense.

Any other time this would be a great idea, but I think now isn’t that time...just sayin’

Don’t mean to offend mate
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

To be honest, and that's my 2cents worth, I feel as if that could have been formulated in a much more diplomatic way...

It does come across as harsh

What's going on tosh?

Your post comes across as very rude, but it's made worse because you bought knives from Spudley just over a week ago.

Sorry spud
Didn’t mean to come across harsh, but I just thought it was slightly unnecessary. You are basically asking fellow members to ignore government guidelines, not to mention putting other members health at risk. Is it really worth it.

Sorry if I’ve upset everyone, stupidly I thought this pandemic was quite serious.

My mistake, sorry  :hatsoff:

Even still you continue to make snotty comments.

1. Saying no offense after calling it "pat on the back nonsense" does not cut it.

2. I can assume, since you have not similarly chastised each and every sales thread, that this was aimed at me. Or perhaps since money is not exchanging hands, you feel it is more dangersous?

3. Responding with a comment like "stupidly I thought this pandemic was quite serious" is not an apology. It is merely an attempt to continue your rude behavior along with an excuse that I assume you feel makes a profound point.

4. In the future, please feel free to not respond to any of my posts.

So feel free to not respond to this sir, because I have blocked you and your lack of sincerity does not impress. I think the folks here have just seen the measure of your character in both of your responses.

Further, I would ask that the mods please remove your unnecessary and insincere "apology" as well as your snide original response.

No I didn’t- but thanks for the swipe
A week ago I was at work- now furloughed
A week ago the UK pm was not in intensive care
A week ago...things were very very different.

Seems a lot happens in a week!!

Just to add - the US is going to suffer far worse than any other country by current statistics. Maybe now is not the time to be so blasé

Stay safe everyone.

In situations when you are affraid, the natural response is to get angry and fight back at what causes that fear. When you're unable to do this, you find other "target" for that anger, even if it is something you'd not normally get angry about (or at least, not so angry about).

I get it, I sometimes find myself shouting at my parents for going out to get a newspaper or a loaf of bread. Only afterwards do I realize I'm shouting at the smurfing virus, but by then, the damage is made. Even after apologizing, I still feel bad.

Apologies are not to be made, they are to be avoided.

Having said that, let's try to see what really is causing our actions. Not easy to control our emotions, certainly not in a time like this, but let's try it. This is the time to relly more on our rationality and less on our emotions.

Very generous of you, bro. I understand your idea, trying to keep things going as they did before this global lockdown started. It makes sense, we have to be careful but that doesn't mean we have to completely stop doing everything we did before.

Lots of stores are still delivering things to customers, restaurants are serving meals to takeaway, there are still supermarkets, auto repair shops, pharmacies open and serving customers.

I, personally, choose to stay at home as much as I can and to have as little personal interaction to other persons (even family and friends) as possible. I stopped buying/selling stuff online. But that's me, my choice. I understand and respect anyone choosing to do other wise, as long as they take adequate precautions.

Having said that, and as beautiful as that Case Copperlock Wharncliffe is and no matter how much it makes me    , I'm going to pass on this initiative.

Hope everyone who engages in it stays safe and enjoys it!

Spudley - I very much appreciate the sentiment.  I logged on and thought this was such a nice gesture.  I'm sure everyone can use their common sense and upload pictures of the chain of GAW for all to see, enjoy, and anticipate - a bit of distraction in a time of immense fear and grief.  Once this pandemic ends we can all venture out to the post office and mail out the packages to the person ahead of us on the chain, all at once and not when it's unsafe.  Each person knows who they're going to receive a package from, and to whom they have to send one.  One fine day, everyone will walk home from their mailbox happily carrying their parcel with the SAK parcel hook.  It's a little something to look forward to, and very kind of you to initiate.

I think it's a preposterous assumption made with very little thought to assume that you meant this Pay it Forward Giveaway should occur in real-time, right now, with each person immediately taking their package to the post office as soon as there is someone to pay it forward to.  Nowhere in my twisted imagination did I assume that's how you proposed this would be conducted

I'll keep an eye on this thread and see if I can come up with something nice.

Indeed, in this community of problem solvers that routinely thinks outside the box we should take this opportunity to figure out how our most important multi-tool - our language is put into use.  Think about what the other person was really trying to communicate, and think about how you are using your words to send a message forward.

I think it is a great idea. If we keep the package size small, you can also send it from a drop-in box. No need to interact with postal workers. And if local orders restrict your movements you can always send it later. Just the anticipation of receiving some goods in the mail is always uplifting in my experience

Spudley nailed it in his first few lines. There's a lot of stress, and a lot of worry around. This may affect how we interact with each other on here for a while, and may highlight differences as well as commonalities. It may strain our online relationships a little too... if we let it.

Let us not forget, we're all going through different personal hardships, emotionally and financially, and our various locations may all have different approaches to dealing with the pandemic. Now more than ever, we must accept that what is right for one, may not be right for another.

I recently did a giveaway, and those items have yet to be posted. I am personally waiting till such a time as "unnecessary" trips like that become part of normal life again, before I post those items. This is in no way what I think others should be doing, purely my personal stance based on my personal circumstances.

I think Spudley's gesture was well meaning, kind, and generous. Whilst I'm unable to take part at the moment, I hope this giveaway will resume, and it lifts the spirits of those who feel safe to take part, and whose local restrictions allow it. I also hope that spirit of kindness and community spreads to those who cannot participate for whatever reason, and the take strength from the fact that while our immediate communities may be paused, the camaraderie and kindness of MTO membership endures.

I wish you all the best, not just in terms of staying safe from the virus, but also staying well in the face of the emotional and financial pressures that are also taking their toll. Deep breaths everyone. We might need to cut each other a little extra slack for a while.

Be well  :salute:

... and locks on folding knives are poo  :P
