Wingman-TypeR
on: March 08, 2020, 11:02:22 AM
Kind of chilly here in the Mod Section recently....

Here's a mod on a Wingman's base, with some improvements. At least for myself. Let's call this a Wingman-TypeR  :)

The stainless scales went for a quick acid bath and then sanded to given it a contrasting colour.

Wingman comes with a partially serrated blade, which I have very little love for.. Decided to give it the full serration treatment. Though sharpening is more tricky now, but when done correctly, it is a very aggressive cutter. And, I think the coolness factor went up a notch.  8)  Some reshaping done on the scissors as well. Grounded the cutting edge to actually CUT things.

Pliers is modded from a Rev. Non-sprung, bypass cutter. Reshaped and polished up. Closed up the handle splay as well. Major improvement from the weird original Wingman's that does not cut things.

The internals. Grounded a file to be a smaller utility cutter. Perfect for scoring tapes and packagings. Awl and smaller flathead came for the stock can opener. Quite happy with how they turned out. Sits nicely on the centre axis.

Smaller, shorter blades are always easier for opening boxes and cutting tapes. I was using the Wave's serrated blade the other day and it was just too awkward.. The cutting tip was too far forward to control.

Now, final snap with what the Wingman-R have to offer.

looks great. I especially like the full-length serrated blade - definitely an improvement. That finish on the scales also looks amazing

Thanks Peeps!

Turn out that the wingman/sidekick/rev series are really painfully designed. The hot spot that perfectly hits the fleshy part of the palm bothered me too much when using the pliers.  :twak: :twak:  I literally grounded down that entire hot spot. Not that pretty, but that huge irritant is totally gone. I bet some of you had thought of doing this before. Worth it? a big YES!

Amazing how much better the splay got. :hatsoff:

The Wingman etc frame is very uncomfortable. Lots of points and edges digging into palm and fingers. And lots of unused space. And the cutters, and the scissors, and the file...

The one at the back is the Rev. The splay is horrendous!

I realy like it. But... Using the Wingman... well, it's fantastic for storage work and fishing. No hard work. I'll keep it the same for the warranty :))) And nope, no hot spots on my hands. If it ain't broke, don't fix it... Mine is broke, warranty

Well.. To me it's pointless to stick to something that's unusable. The warranty program here doesn't work like in the US. So being stock or not have no difference. I have quite a bit of parts so anything damaged are self repaired.  :salute:
