I’m in if this counts. Got this as a knifecentre coloured bantam as I really like red alox but it was far too thin for me - so much so that I was going to sell it - but whacked a saw in it instead and, hey presto, instantly awesome!

Thank you. Gotta love red alox - out of all the colours it’s still my favourite. Hi

Hey Lumberjack/Walker People,

JNOXYD asked a question recently about the origin, or even validity, of the name Lumberjack.
Apparently it does not appear in any of the catalogues.

Anyone here any ideas, theories or even ..... knowledge!   ;)

Any help gratefully received.   :tu:

Hello to all lovers of these little knives.  I don’t have many types of them, hopefully enough to be a member of the club?  I have a question. Who can tell me where the name Lumberjack came from and which knife was first named so?  I only see 240k in old catalogs, Plumber in SMICO catalog and Walker.  I have one suspicion, but I want to hear your opinion friends.

Interesting question...  :D

This is what LeaF has to say on his site (https://leaf-vics.com/2021/07/893-lumberjack.html), also a bit of a mystery for him:

The Victorinox Lumberjack (nowadays we know it as Walker) is an old model which was produced for the years. From my knowledge (for sure I can be wrong) this model initially had an Alox scales and was known as Model 2231. Later, another variation with cellidor scales was produced and this variation was available till 2000’s. Then this model was withdrawn until 2015, when Victorinox released this knife again, but listed as Walker.

The Walker in comparison with original Lumberjack got a scale tools (toothpick and tweezers), while original model never was equipped with scale tools, at least I thought so… until acquired this particular Lumberjack with cellidor scales and (suddenly!) with toothpick and tweezers.

So, if anybody can explain the real history of Lumberjack/Walker (in context of presence/absence of scale-tools) – it will be highly appreciated

This is what archerwin makes of the Lumberjack at his site (http://archerwinsak.blogspot.com/2014/10/collection-victorinox-lumberjack-84mm.html):

This is one of the smallest SAK with a wood saw.  It has been part of the Victorinox line-up since the 1970's but instead of the combo tool, there was a small blade included with the part number 1240ku.  During the 1980's, Victorinox replaced the small blade with a combo tool found in the other 84mm knives and named it as a Lumberjack.  Other catalogs also identifies it as the Plumber.
Education is a journey that starts when you realize that knowing a little about something opens the door to the universe.

This is what I mean: we all use this name, but where did it come from?  Yes, Erwin also says “During the 1980s Victorinox ... named it as a Lumberjack”, but who has seen the Catalog or price list  with that name?

I have a Lumberjack (from long prior to Walker production) that has nylon economy scales and scale tools.  It's pictured in reply #26 of this thread.

Got to love a Walker.  8)  Coincidentally I think it pairs very well with a Rambler.

Oops never saw this and created another thread.  Maybe an Admin/Mod can merge them:

Anyway, here are my Elinox Lumberjack and Vic Walker together. Wish they would sell the Walker in other scale colors. Would be great to own one in Black, White, Green, and Yellow. Haha!

That is a nice one. I’ve been fixated on the Wenger Basic 66 (Lumberjack + corkscrew) for the last couple days after finding a trashed one on eBay (can’t justify buying in such poor shape). Didn’t know it existed. Found info on sakwiki and smartknives sites. Now the hunt begins. Haha

I wanted to document the pictures of the one I turned down eBay offer on. Too expensive for such a beater, but want pics for future reference.

How’s this or is it awl a bit much! It’s everything a Lumberjack wants to be when it grows up. a lumberjack
Big but with plus scales and an awl (had to thin that slightly but not so it affects function at all. Put this together as a partner for a rather nice alox classic I have coming and I think they will make perfect companions.

I just picked up a used blue one! I noticed after getting it in my hands that it has a version of the combo tool I was unfamiliar with. The middle one in jnoxyd's photo is the same. It has the ECONOMY stamp on the tang of the large blade and looks like it's never been used.

I'm tempted to swap out the knife/combo tool spring with the corkscrew I have from a Waiter I took apart.

I’d hesitate to part this out for the combo tool.  :dunno:

Waiters with this original Combo Tool aren’t that rare, if you want the same parts. But your knife is pretty cool and I think has decent value at auction with a good listing with clear pictures and good description of what it is. Blue with the Elinox ‘Federal’ shield hot-stamped in good condition plus a stainless inlay is fairly rare, IMO.

I got several other Walkers in today…and I’d rather have yours.
