Making a Yeoman - hacker badge request
on: April 14, 2020, 03:21:28 PM
I’ve long admired the Yeoman, and nearly made one last year, but ended up with my InvesTigator and CT34 mods instead. So, having sourced some suitable “willing donors”, a Compact and an Explorer, I set to work by first popping off the scales using a bradawl and Vic can opener after leaving the knives to warm up in my conservatory to make them less liable to snap and perhaps re-use in the future. Next I used a punch to mark the centres of the rivets before using a Dremel to drill, burr out and grind off the rivet heads whilst preserving the 3 little brass rings that grip the scales and damaging them as little as possible- I’m definitely getting better at this as all came off intact with very little marking - one of the 2.2s even popped straight off as I was marking the centre with the punch requiring no drilling at all.

Next using my pre-drilled template board position one (on left) I place the knife with drilled out/sanded off rivet heads onto the board over the holes which a) hold the knife in position and b) let the rivet be driven out of the knife and through the template board. So using a punch and small hammer, I knock each of the 4 rivets out to release each alloy layer and load of tools in succession making sure none go flying off as they are released from the tension of the back spring and laying them carefully down on a board in the order they come off to aid re-assembly- a photo when completed also helps for future reference, that and examining other examples of the knife to assist for when bits do fly off!!! Here I’ve laid out the layers of both the Compact and the Explorer - as you can see, both were generously lubricated by the factory and I had to wipe a lot of oil off.

Next step is to pull out the Philips and magnifier layer from the Explorer and put it where I want with the Compact to make it a Yeoman. The other bits from the Explorer will go into a new spares bin for a future project ( no ideas yet, mind you!). Next I use a bit of wire wool to clean off the alloy plates, especially the edges which can be a little sharp after stamping. Next job is peening the ends of 2 lengths of 2.5mm and 2.2mm brass rod, using 4 different lengths to make assembly easier, and rounding off the non-peeled ends to help the plates/tools slip on. Take your time with peening as it is easy to bend the rods over if be too enthusiastic with the hammer as I found out last year! Next job is assembly, and I use a small screwdriver to lever against the rod to pop the last tool in places over the back spring - I couldn’t photograph this as my hands were full! The layer with the multi-tool and split ring holder really tests your patience, but this year it went together more easily - perhaps practice does pay off?! Next I use a cutting disc on the Dremel to cut the brass one mm over the circular grip rings and peen the edges over to create a new rivet, leaving the non-ringed rivet till last. Keep checking the tension as you hammer the rivet heads flat to ensure that all slop is removed, yet the tools still snap down with that satisfying Vic snap.

This should leave you with a naked Yeoman, but this is your last opportunity to check all rivets are as tight as should be and that all tools snap in and out satisfactorily- I now wash the knife thoroughly to remove all grit from the earlier stages, and once dry I selected some suitable plus scales, in this case yellow, and use the vice to ease them over the rivet grip rings. Next install the scale tools, lube and admire your handiwork - and here is my set of three mods: InvesTigator with Ti scales (the combi tool just clips the alloy liner when using metal scales, so a little material needs removing to aid that snap - the cellidor scales bend a little so the tool clears the alloy liner with no problem), CT34 with bit holder moved to the middle, and now a bright yellow Yeoman.  :climber:

Thanks, Wspeed- it was a project I meant to do at Xmas, but it was too cold in the conservatory! The sun this Easter inspired me to get on with it now that the garden is in that wait to see what sprouts stage!

I did consider that, but I tend to use the scissors more and prefer them in the middle, hence this build up, I also prefer the magnifier to one side - that’s the beauty of modding, you make it the way you’d prefer - I also did a slightly different lay-up for my CT34, not for everyone but it suits me. :tu:

Excellent project Rizio.   I've been thinking of making a Yeoman for myself as well.  Still not quite warm enough in my garage workshop, so for now I will live vicariously through you.

Many thanks, Zoidberg, for the badge, and to everyone else for the kind comments! I am a big fan of the Explorer, but it is a little bit big for my ideal pocket EDC, but the Yeoman gives you most of the functions with a layer fewer - shame it’s discontinued, but then I wouldn’t have had the incentive to make one - and a big thanks to Eidgenosse for his YouTube tutorials! Thank you again! :hatsoff:

I built mine that way too. It's actually better for access on the side. And Phillips screws that are in an interior 90° corner are easier to get to.

I also wanted the scissor layer in the center so the hook when used as a kick stand supports the knife better.

Congrats on the badge and welcome to the club!
