Reshape nail file on cadet?
« on: December 17, 2013, 05:20:13 PM »
Has anyone here ever reshaped the nail file on the cadet to a flat phillips screw driver?

And if so, did it work?

Not on a Cadet, but I did that to my Wenger Evo16.  Works fine for light duty.  :tu:

I was thinking about giving it a bevel grind so it doubles as a small blade. Anyone did this? Is it easy to do?...

Same as JD, I did it on a Wenger, and it was great. You only need to take like a millimeter off the tip for it to become a fine light-duty phillips. And it doesn't really change its function for nail cleaning, so why not?

As for sharpening it. I wouldn't, personally. Im not sure if the file is heat treated the same as the blade metal, so no telling how it'd hold an edge.

Thanks. I was thinking about doing it very slowly, with some metal files, rough sharpener stones, then smoother sharpener stones but it might not come out nice...

I find the can opener on the Cadet still works pretty well for Philips screws, even though it's a bit smaller than the 93mm piece.

Most I've seen with the file is someone reshaping it into an awl.

The Wenger nail file works as a phillips stock w/o modding.

Lurking with a large collection of sharp knives!

That's true, but the tip is at too acute an angle (too pointy), and bottoms out easily in all but the very smallest Phillips screws.
I Dremelled mine (both Wenger and Vic) to match the angles found on the various "flat phillips drivers", most commonly found on Wengers, Leatherman Squirts etc. That angle is 57 degrees or so, fits perfectly, and with a rounding of the tip will fit from very small Phillips through #2's.
Bonus: still works as a nail cleaner tip ;-)

I'll use the can opener tip, but a lot of screws are recessed just enough that you can't reach it with the can opener tool.

For the really, really small ones, yes. But for the bigger ones I find it too pointy and it slips way to often.

I think I want to remove the opening blade from one of mine with a can opener and make it into a kind of combo tool, similar to the technician's screwdriver but also a backup cap lifter.

Just inn case.

I'm wondering if you, or anyone, has a picture of their modded for Philips driver nail files.

The question became moot when I added a Victorinox quatro to the P-38 in my wallet, and changed my EDC to an executive.
