A one-stick-fire with the Mora Kansbol

If I’m not mistaken, a one stick fire is a trendy-bushcrafty thing to do. Why not use two sticks? Three, even? I can’t think of a survival or camping situation where someone would be forced to create a fire from a single stick. Whatever. I decided to give it a shot with my Mora Kansbol. No matter what nice expensive knives I acquire, it seems that a Mora can do just as good.

It’s been raining all day and everything is soaked. I chose my stick. Wet, but it will be fine.

First, I broke the stick up into manageable pieces. The Mora was not great at this, but it was more than do-able. I made a total of three smaller sticks and left the rest.

Next, I split the first piece up into tiny pieces and used some of them to make shavings. I found a piece of cardboard to hold the shavings as I worked and provide a dry surface.
“Hey! That’s not part of the stick!”
Fine. Just pretend it’s a leaf then.
The Mora was absolutely wonderful to work with for this part, as you would expect.

Finally, I split the remaining two sticks into medium-sized pieces. Now, to work on the tinder. I will use the 90 degree spine of the mora to scratch off a bunch of fluff. Nope. It just started raining.

One of the great things about practicing in your backyard is the fact that the house is just steps away. In I went to make my tinder inside, much to the dismay of the fiancé.

After the rain, I headed back out to start my fire. First chance was a big failure. I made some more fluff/fuzz and tried again. No luck at first, but with about 5 minutes of persistence I was able to get it going.

I have put this blade through a good bit of similar use (minus the batoning against the grain) and have had no issues to date. It makes you wonder how much of the “a knife needs a full tang” stuff is just marketing.
