Free P2 for the bin..
on: May 03, 2020, 05:29:05 PM
Soo...the P2 gave up today while flicking the handles back to the closed position, after using them to cut some 3 core cable, whilst up a ladder replacing a security light, the inner tab that stops the plier head on one side decided to snap. Only found out when I noticed the pliers flapping around when closed.
Unfortunately it’s now unusable.
And to top it off I modified the P2 a while back, with a T2 blade and modified some of the other tools to suit, also I’ve only just managed to get the Free ‘Free’ so that there is no binding or seizing to the plier head when used.
So no warranty for me..

That's a bugger. Can you not unmodify it and send it into Whitby? Even modded a bit it's still worth a shot, they do have the power of discretion.

Yeah mite try sending it in as is. Don’t really want to take any replacement tools off my T4 as that’s fine and gets used.
Worth a try I guess, as it’s not getting any use now.
Cheers.

I second Fuzzy's suggestion. I've made only good experiences with Whitby  ;)

Sad how the Wave just keeps providing reliability where the so called "new generation" of tools hasn't been doing much apart from disappoint...

Surely you could weld/wedge/glue/screw/etc something in to be a plier stop. Whatever you do please don't bin it.

Wow.  Of all the things to break.  Didn't even realize the pliers rest had any real force placed on it.

Sent an email to Leatherman UK (Whitby) explaining what happened and the mods etc.
Just gonna wait and see what they say.
Obviously warranty is closed atm so no returns etc.
Worst case they say no. But if I have to pay towards a repair etc I might just do that, then sell the tool to recoup any losses and put it towards something else?

Whitby don’t repair, they only replace.

I would de-modify it best you can and it’s down to their discretion whether they replace it or not. Of course best to be honest with them as you have already. If the problem has not been caused by the mods, they may still replace. Worth a shot anyway.

Hope it goes well.

Doesn’t bode well for the free so far though. I have a P2 that I have not used yet, only ‘played with‘ and I quite like it. Shame there seems to be some issues with them though.

Not if the pliers move freely, but if they jammed when the tool was being closed, it might be different.

drill a hole and put a thin leaf spring there to holde the plier in position.
It shouldnt happen yet it is fixable

I’ll see what they say. If it’s a no, then I’ll fix it probably.

That’s disappointing to say the least Olives. Although modified, I would think they will offer a replacement, unless the modification could be attributed to the failure.

I hate that this new and improved tool has failed in such a way for you. At least when that part failed on a wave it just made closing difficult. Did you have to do anything to the T2 blade or did it just drop in?

Well......got my reply-

“Good afternoon Steve,
thank you for your email. I'm sorry but due to the number of modifications that you have made to the tool, you have invalidated your warranty. This is not something that we would be able to process for you”

Pretty disappointed. I told them that I changed changed the main blade to one from my t2 and modified the package opener.
Oh well won’t be getting another Free that’s for sure, carrying my SOG power assist today :multi:

Now to think of a fix.  Bummer they wont at least take a look to see the modifications didn't contributed to the failure.

Yeah I’ll try come up with a fix later.
I told them I would be happy to pay something towards a new one if needs be. I’m surprised they didn’t even ask to see pics or even contemplate sending it in later.

There's a guy here on the forum who sells LM parts, Loki-mobile. He's a stand up bloke. Perhaps message him and ask if he has parts (handle/frame) for you to fix it with?
