Off brand challenge level 1
on: May 15, 2020, 08:40:55 AM
Yesterday I picked up a Stanley Fatmax multitool and figured I would try and carry only that for a week and see if it is good/decent/useless.
So here we go with day 1:

The knife is sharp enough to open a packet of nuts :tu:
We'll see if I can find something more to use it for during the day.

I got curious about this tool and, looked around; this thing is fat. Those scales look to be wider than the tools inside of them. And I guess this is what inspired the Center Drive Plus scissors!.
I'll be following through just to see how it fairs, RF52. Thanks! :tu:

Day 2:

Pics of the tools :tu:
The scissors are useless as mine came with broken spring part, but for 10 buckaroones you can't be too picky
And it has a knife, which I use more than scissors anyway :tu:

Cheap or not, a broken spring on a tool shouldn’t happen

How is the quality of the steel? Can you bend the tools like a tin can?

They feel quite sturdy actually :tu:
I sent an e-mail to Stanley about the scissors, we'll see what they say. If there is any kind of warranty on such a cheap tool it would be awesome :salute:
The overall build quality on the other tools feels very good, and I plan on testing it as much as I can at work the rest of the challenge.

I have seen these in the shops and was sometimes tempted, will follow to see how you get on with it  :salute:  Stanley usually make ok stuff so i don't think you will struggle too much with it, hopefully they will sort you out for the broken bits :tu:

Cool that someone is interested in my little challenge, and it is more of a challenge compared to carrying a Leatherman, Gerber or Sog. But it's fun to try something new that might be surprisingly good for the price :tu:

I have looked at these for some time but I pocket carry and they look like they are too wide for that. Interested to see how you get along with them.

I am looking forward to you opening a can with this! :like:
Or at least trying... The opener looks a little too far to the right.

If I can find one that doesn't have the pulltab I might try, maybe it's more suited for left handed opening :tu:

I'll take left handed opening over no opening.

Day 3:

Just a quick pic, been a busy day.
The wire cutters work very well, clean cut of the thickest and thinnest stranded copper wire I could find :tu:

Now this is good to know, and since they're an integral part of the jaw should be plenty strong; no more exploding replaceable carbide cutters!!! :woohoo:

Not sure how much abuse they will take but for electrical wires they should be perfectly fine :tu:

That's good news, some of those drivers twist round into little corkscrews then snap off  :tu:

These are more good news, and looks like it is pretty squared and even; most C&C's I've seen tend to be somewhat rounded at the corners and at the tip, making them useless as screwdrivers.

I'll be waiting/watching for the phillips driver test, and if any of the square driver adapters work on it; I have Leatherman's RBD, Gerber's Tool Kit, and a couple of generic ones, and hope that at least one works with the Fatmax!

Used the pliers to adjust a fuse holder to fit the cables. The pliers did a good job :tu:

Good to know! :tu:

BTW, Is the handle splay uncomfortable?  From the action picture, it reminds me of the factory Rev/Wingman/Sidekick splay...

I've never really figured out what all of you mean by handle splay :dunno: Is it how far the handles open in use?
