The Great Chains and Pedals thread.
on: May 25, 2020, 07:03:21 AM
I know we have a motorcycle/scooter thread, but I'd like to start one specifically devoted to pedals and chains! Mountain Bikes, Road Bikes, Commuter Bikes, Tricycles, Pedal Powered Go Karts, YOU NAME IT! Share yours and show it off here! Or if you find something you find interesting or want to ask a question feel free to chime in!  :tu:

I live in Bicycle Country (the Netherlands) where the number of bicycles per capita is roughly 2.64*
My normal bike I use for casual bike rides, picking up my kids from school or daycare, etc. is a non-interesting Gazelle Eclipse that is fairly basic and very reliable. It has a Nexus 8 speed hub, front hub dynamo and roller brakes.

I also have a lightweight road bike (or "hipster bike" ;) ): a 2018 Cube Hyde Race with an Alfine 8 hub, disk brakes and nothing else except for a lock. It's an OK bike but it hasn't been without issues. I've never been able to correctly adjust the brakes for example. It doesn't have a chain but it's a belt drive. It could fail any minute now because it's only a Gates CDN system which is pretty weak. My wife has a CDX belt drive which is much stronger.

*) I made that number up

It's an old photo, I've since replaced the basic factory pedals for a set of Shimano PD-A530 SPD pedals which are so much nicer!

Very nice Reinier! I have a Schwinn fitness bike that I'm going to be converting into a gravel/touring bike later on down the road(pun intended) I'll post some pics today once I get done tinkering around in the garage  :like:

I'm excited to see where this thread goes! Who doesn't like bicycles? They're good for your health, the environment, plus they're a blast to ride!

My bicycle is a 1978 Gazelle.
All steel; no plastic, teflon, or aluminium parts.
It´s heavy but a pleasure to ride.
My other 1.64 bikes are trash.

I ride a 2015ish Fuji Sportif Disc. It has a 2x10 drivetrain and has been modified a little bit with shifters and an alternate cassette but otherwise stock.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

My wife's new Gazelle just arrived. Basically the same model as her previous one (from 2010 or something), but updated. Really nice with the matte black paint.

Sweet Ride!

Thank you!
We're not entirely happy with it though. The matte paint on the handlebars started to fade after a month. We got new handlebars (steering bar?) from the store under warranty but that was actually quite a difficult story. Quality-wise the bike is worse than her previous one.

Her other Gazelle (twice as expensive) is awesome though. It has hydraulic disc brakes, an 8 speed Alfine hub and Gates CDX belt drive:

I'm also not happy with my Cube Hyde Race. I'm thinking about replacing it with a Stevens Super Flight. I'm in love with that one:

Compared to the Cube it has better everything ( ;) ) including an 11 speed Alfine hub and CDX instead of CDN belt drive. It also has a rear rack, kickstand, lights and mudguards. My Cube is a pretty basic, naked bicycle. And I mostly ride it at night when it always seems to be raining ;)

I’ll bet that belt drive Stevens is a really smooth and silent running e-bike!

Grew up riding bikes at a very young age and have been in love with being up on two wheels ever since. Now in retirement and after a surgery which required reattachment of my quadriceps tendon on my left knee, I have rediscovered bike riding with an electric assist. Then of course, like my Leatherman Skeketool, it took on a life of it’s own and as I began to customize it.
Absolutely love cruising it along the beach with my new e-bike!

Nice bike you've got there!

The Stevens is not an e-bike. It's possible to add a Pendix e-Drive system but that one is almost as expensive as the bicycle itself :P (the 500Wh twin battery version is €2190, the bike is €2000).

Thank you for the kind words Reinier and I stand corrected. I loved reading your post about so many folks riding bikes in your part of the world and I think its awesome.
My electric pedal assist bike has enabled me to rehabilitate my injury and get back outdoors again at the same time. I truly feel blessed at my age... :hatsoff:

:hatsoff:

That's one of the best things about e-bikes, enabling people to go outside again and exercise a bit :tu:

Not sure about the speed pedelec bikes that can do 45km/h (28mph). You can't hear them and they are fast... Lots of accidents happen with pensioners on fast bikes unfortunately.

I think I might be the reason for that. Did not see these when creating the Vic and bike thread :(
I wouldn’t mind combining these. Possible? Favoured or frowned upon?

I'd say: combine this thread with the one in the Outdoor section (last post one year ago) but keep the "SAKs and bikes" thread for nice pics of knives and bicycles.

But I'm fine with any choice :)

That might make sense, topic wise. Would we have content for both? Maybe, dunno..

My new bicycle (Stevens Super Flight 2021) just arrived. Due to COVID-19 it was delivered to my doorstep (I had opted for pickup at the store).

A bit dusty!

I like biking at night but thanks to the curfew we're under that's not gonna happen :(

What are the specs? Looks like Shimano discs and is that a Gates belt drive?

Thank you!

Yes, Shimano Deore BR-M446 brakes, Alfine 11 speed hub, Gates CDX center track belt. This bike replaces a "naked" Cube bike with 8 speed Alfine and a CDN belt.
