The Farmer X Double Secret Adventure Society
on: May 27, 2020, 12:48:51 AM
The Farmer X is basically the Swiss Army Knife I've been waiting for since long before I joined MTo. I'm not going to review it, because its every implement has been discussed to death both here and abroad, from tame unboxings all the way to insane torture tests. Instead, I'm going to explain why I've gravitated to this tool set for so long.

  • Alox is tough, tough, tough. While I adore my blue Px, I like that silver doesn't show nearly as much wear.
  • I've spent more time prying than almost anything. It's also good for screws and bottles. The 93mm is slightly larger than the 91mm.
  • Most food cans where I live do not have pull tabs, and I'm surprised at how often I end up in places without a crank opener. Also, I prefer this screwdriver tip to the inline Phillips because this one will work with #2 Robertson screws in a pinch. Those are the square ones, and they are ubiquitous here. If I need a dedicated Phillips, it's time for me to go full screwdriver anyway.
  • There's not much to say about the Victorinox blade that hasn't been said before.
  • I ream many things. The 93mm awl is also a decent pokey (for poking things.)
  • The saw is the tool I use least these days, which is one reason I've regularly switched between the Huntsman and the Pioneer X. When I'm hiking and camping, however, I really like having a proven saw on my person in case I get separated from larger dedicated tools. This has happened.
  • Halfway through a week-long mountaineering expedition, a paramedic performed a friend's much-needed emergency toenail surgery with the scissors on another friend's Climber. That's when I added scissors to my required lineup. More lastingly, I don't bite my nails anymore, and tiny origami dinosaurs are easier than they used to be.
  • The keyring isn't a tool as such. When you grow up in a forestry town, however, you soon learn that if you can't attach something to your body, you might lose it next time you fall headlong down a slope covered in devil's club (we found that knife a few weeks later, sprinkled with bite marks).

Just because it's nice outside and I've broken out the camera anyway, here are thickness comparisons with a Pioneer X and a Huntsman. I'll let you figure out which is which.

I'm the first one here, so I get to pick the name for the owners' club. Ha!

Ordered mine today directly from Vic.  You beat me to the punch starting an owners club by about an hour.

That was a near thing, then, because mine arrived an hour earlier than I expected.

93mm awl is also sharp enough to do stuff you would quite often use the tip of a knife for, but don't want to mess up your blade.  I just used one here this week to cut apart two cans that comprise a Chow Mein kit that were taped together. The 93mm awl is really the tool that made me jump to that frame size. The more I use them, the more I do challenges, and now in one where my primary knives are Alox, the more I find backside tools are hard to use.

And being a bit slimmer than a Huntsman/Fieldmaster. Perfect if I do say so. This knife is gonna replace a Huntsman, Fieldmaster, and an Outrider in EDC.

Mine is due to arrive tomorrow (subject to previously moaned about delivery issues...blah, blah  ::) )

A little concerned to see that the Vic' site says "delivered" on one page but "in transit" on another

Still, it's not supposed to be here until tomorrow (Thurs' in the UK) so I guess I'll wait and see  :dunno:

It's going to be a long night  :ahhh

The Farmer X is already an accessory to some light B+E. It's a place I'm allowed to be — I just forgot my keys.

Bugger! It's not here yet

I checked the Vic/DHL site and, despite the ETA being today, it's shown as being in somewhere in Germany; Rodgau  :dunno:

Feeling a bit dis-chuffed  >:(
Here's to tomorrow... :drink:

Well, I mean, I know I used the word Society, but it's hard to be pretentious when  you're really just a bunch of people who carry the same clasp knife.

Is that from Nelson Custom Works? He makes neat customs.

It is from Nelson Custom Works and he does have some nice ones.  I have been tempted by a few others.

Definitely want to join. I love my Farmer, and my Fieldmaster, and wished for a Farmer X long before its release. Though I am very attached to the D.Tinker pliers, so we'll see. I bet by the time I get a Farmer X they'll release another one with pliers.

I remember you, Jothra.
I've stumbled upon your challenge threads long ago, and will go through them tonight.
We have badges for 30 day challenges now. And for a bunch of other stuff. :D
I think you could qualify for a badge or two.  :pok:
Very nice to see you posting again.  :salute:

I ordered mine on Monday as well and the initial delivery date was yesterday.

Now when I look at the tracking ID it states 1st June (and it's still shown as being in Germany)  :dunno:

UPS brought this Farmer X today. It is a gift from my best friend.

I love the feel of it. It fits my hand perfectly and has a great tool set. I have always preferred the awl on the alox models over the awl on the backside.

This actually is the perfect EDC SAK.
